All but two House Democrats on Wednesday voted down a bill that would require medical attention for babies born alive following an abortion.
The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act was passed on a near party-line vote with 220 voting in favor and 210 voting against. All of the congressional Republicans and only one Democrat, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), voted to save children born following an abortion while the rest of the Democrat Party voted against the measure. One Democrat, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) voted “present.”
The bill requires that doctors “must (1) exercise the same degree of care as would reasonably be provided to any other child born alive at the same gestational age, and (2) ensure the child is immediately admitted to a hospital.”
The proposed law also mandates that doctors or other employees of an abortion clinic “who has knowledge of a failure to comply with the degree-of-care requirements must immediately report such failure to law enforcement.”
In a press release, the bill’s author, Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) wrote “It pains me that this fight has to be fought at all, but medical care for babies should not be a partisan issue. Now, with Republicans in the Majority, the House will finally take action and vote to protect the fundamental right to life.”
“This doesn’t really have much to do with abortion. It’s quite frankly infanticide,” Rep. Wagner added in a video to Twitter. “There are hundreds of babies born alive that survive an abortion and are left to die in a clinic, in a bucket, alone. It’s wrong. It’s unconscionable. And it’s something that we sadly got to legislate. Every child that comes into this world no matter their circumstance should have their right to life-saving care.”
Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO), who co-sponsored the bill, took to Twitter to explain his vote and highlight the radicalism of the Democrats who voted against the legislation.
“Democrats are so radical and so extreme that they voted against protecting a born-alive infant,” Alford said. “Democrat Governor Ralph Northam (D-VA), who’s a medical doctor himself, said that born alive survivors from third-trimester abortions should be delivered and kept comfortable until the family and doctors could decide if an alive and living baby should remain alive.”
“This is abhorrent folks. This is infanticide,” he added. “And it is our responsibility to pass this protection of life, which is exactly what we did today.”
With Democrats increasingly willing to take the most radical positions on abortion, this legislation is needed to protect the most innocent among us. With 210 Democrats voting against the bill, it goes to show just how radical the Democrats have become.
