Rand Paul Says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has said that President&nbsp;Joe Biden wouldn\u2019t&nbsp;negotiate over conditions for raising the national debt ceiling, but \u201cI have news for him,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/02\/10\/exclusive-rand-paul-encourages-truckers-to-come-to-america-and-clog-cities-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sen. Rand Paul<\/a>&nbsp;said, \u201cHe absolutely will negotiate.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul, R-Ky., joined five other Republican senators at a press conference at the Capitol on Wednesday to address America\u2019s debt ceiling and the need for fiscal restraint in Congress. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Republican \u201cmajority in the House will not vote to raise the debt ceiling without significant budget reform,\u201d Paul said. \u201cThe greatest threat to our country, and the greatest threat to our national security, is the debt.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">America reached its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/23\/most-americans-oppose-raising-debt-ceiling-without-spending-cuts-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debt limit<\/a>&nbsp;of $31.4 trillion on Jan. 19. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says special measures are being taken to prevent defaulting on the debt, but lawmakers need to reach an agreement by early June. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/12\/27\/white-house-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-incompetent-but-failing-upward\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre<\/a>&nbsp;told reporters last week that raising the debt ceiling is \u201csomething that should be done without conditions,\u201d and she added that the&nbsp;White House is&nbsp;\u201cnot going to be negotiating over the debt ceiling.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paul&nbsp;said Congress has an opportunity right now to take significant steps toward balancing the budget, explaining that \u201cit would take compromise between both parties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRepublicans would have to give up the sacred [cow] that says we will never touch a dollar in military [spending], and the Democrats would have to give up the sacred<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>cow [that] they<strong>&nbsp;w<\/strong>ill never touch a dollar in welfare.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to balance the budget, according to Paul, is to \u201cmake the cuts across the board,\u201d because it\u2019s \u201ca responsible thing to do. But President Biden needs to know that absolutely, he will negotiate, and it\u2019s better to start now.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/author\/ted-cruz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sen. Ted Cruz<\/a>, R-Texas, made it clear that Republicans are open to raising the debt ceiling, but are willing to \u201cuse the debt ceiling as leverage to force real and meaningful structural reforms\u201d to congressional spending. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruz criticized Biden, saying the president\u2019s refusal to negotiate is the same as Biden saying, \u201cI don\u2019t care that there\u2019s a Republican majority [in the House]. I don\u2019t care that we\u2019re bankrupting the country. I don\u2019t care that there\u2019s inflation ravaging this country. I, Joe Biden, will negotiate nothing. To hell with you. Let\u2019s default.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s Joe Biden\u2019s position,\u201d the Texas lawmaker said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenTedCruz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenTedCruz<\/a>&nbsp;says President Biden is the only one talking about America defaulting on the debt.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TbeqbSZ2Vm\">pic.twitter.com\/TbeqbSZ2Vm<\/a>\u2014 Virginia Allen (@Virginia_Allen5)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Virginia_Allen5\/status\/1618333657827270660?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruz stressed that America will not default on its debt, and blamed Biden for even suggesting that was a possibility. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is one principal person in this town that is talking about a default of the debt, and that is Joe Biden,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cJoe Biden wants to threaten a default on the debt. He wants to scare the markets. And frankly, he\u2019s counting on y\u2019all,\u201d Cruz said addressing the room of about 40 reporters, \u201cHe\u2019s counting on the press corps just to repeat his talking points. He\u2019s counting on the press corps just to say, \u2018Those crazy Republicans want a default on the debt.\u2019 That is false.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., also spoke to reporters about the debt ceiling shortly before the GOP senators began their press briefing. Republicans need to present a plan to address the debt ceiling because \u201cwe have a plan,\u201d Schumer said of Democrats, adding, \u201cPass the debt ceiling without hostage-taking, without any brinksmanship.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/24\/democrats-introduce-bill-to-eliminate-federal-debt-limit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats proposed a bill<\/a>&nbsp;that would do away with the debt ceiling altogether and allow Congress to borrow the money it needed to pay its bills.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/3305\/text?r=39&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The legislation<\/a>&nbsp;was introduced by Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill., and cosponsored by 42 fellow House Democrats. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because Republicans control the majority in the House, Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said House Republicans are \u201cin the driver\u2019s seat\u201d to pass legislation to rein in spending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson and the other Senate Republicans present\u2014including Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, Rick Scott of Florida, and Mike Braun of Indiana\u2014expressed their support for House Republicans in anticipation of coming negotiations over the budget and the debt ceiling. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lee said too often the decisions made over the debt ceiling end up harming the American people and place the interests of Washington elites above those of the rest of the nation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerica\u2019s poor and middle class have been ravaged by this pattern and practice of abuse,&nbsp;one that enriches a small handful of elites at the cost of everyone else,\u201d the Utah lawmaker said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Heritage Foundation\u2019s senior adviser on budget policy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/author\/matthew-dickerson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew Dickerson<\/a>, told The Daily Signal that \u201cSen.
