Thomas Massie in Kentucky Primary

President Donald Trump has dramatically intensified his effort to remove one of his most persistent Republican critics from Congress. During a visit to northern Kentucky, Trump openly campaigned against Representative Thomas Massie, throwing his support behind a challenger and urging voters to replace the longtime congressman in what is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched Republican primaries of the election cycle.

The president’s involvement has transformed a normally quiet congressional race into a high stakes political battle, fueled by millions of dollars in outside spending and a bitter personal feud between Trump and Massie.

Who Is Thomas Massie

Thomas Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012. The district stretches from communities outside Louisville to the suburbs of Cincinnati and eastern parts of the state. Over the years he has built a loyal base among voters in northern Kentucky and has easily defeated previous primary challengers, winning about 75 percent of the vote in both the 2022 and 2024 elections.

Massie is known for taking independent positions, often standing apart from his party and voting against measure important to Trump and the Republican agenda. Since arriving in Congress, he voted against spending for Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and opposed major legislation backed by his own party.

He also voted against Trump’s sweeping tax and spending measure known as the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act.” His willingness to break with Republican leadership has frequently put him at odds with members of his own party.

More recently, Massie clashed with Trump over the release of government files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Working with Democrats and several Republicans, Massie pushed legislation that forced the Justice Department to release a large set of Epstein records. Trump initially opposed the effort but later agreed to sign the bill once it became clear it would pass.

Massie has also opposed the war with Iran, another issue that has intensified tensions between the congressman and the president.

In short, as a Republican he is more or less useless.

Trump’s Campaign to Remove Massie

Trump traveled directly into Massie’s district to campaign against him, delivering a blistering speech in Hebron, Kentucky.

“Thomas Massie is a disaster for our party,” Trump said during the event. “We got to get rid of this loser, this guy is bad.”

The president continued his attack, accusing the congressman of betraying the party and the country.

“He’s disloyal to the Republican Party, he’s disloyal to the people of Kentucky, and most importantly, he is disloyal to the United States of America, and he’s got to be voted out of the office as soon as possible,” Trump told the crowd.

Trump has also taken his criticism to social media, where he predicted Massie “will go down as the WORST Republican Congressman in the long and fabled history of the United States Congress.”

During the Kentucky event, Trump mocked Massie’s voting record, saying the congressman “votes no on everything.”

“I could give him the best things in the history of a Republican voter, and he’d vote no,” Trump said. “There’s something wrong with him.”

The Challenger: Ed Gallrein

Trump has thrown his full support behind Ed Gallrein, the candidate challenging Massie in the Republican primary.

Gallrein is a farmer and former U.S. Navy SEAL who previously ran for the Kentucky state Senate in 2024. Trump highlighted Gallrein’s military service and background during the event, praising him as the type of candidate he wants representing the district.

https://www.edgallrein.com (you can donate here).

“He’s like central casting,” Trump said. “This is the guy I’m looking for.”

Trump added that he initially wanted “just somebody with a warm body to beat Massie,” but said he found a far stronger candidate.

“I got somebody with a warm body but a big, beautiful brain,” the president said.

Gallrein has embraced Trump’s endorsement and argues that the district deserves a representative who will align with the president and the Republican Party.

“You deserve an authentic, true Republican conservative that stands shoulder to shoulder with our president and the Republican Party,” Gallrein said at the rally.

He has also criticized Massie’s opposition to the Iran war, calling it “unforgivable.”

Trump supporters often highlight Gallrein’s background as a Navy SEAL officer as a major reason they view him as a hero and a strong alternative to the incumbent congressman.

Millions in Outside Money Flood the Race

The effort to unseat Massie has attracted millions of dollars from outside political groups.

Two major super PACs have poured money into the race. The MAGA KY super PAC and the pro Israel RJC Victory Fund have spent roughly $3.6 million on advertisements aimed at defeating Massie.

A Super PAC linked to the Republican Jewish Coalition alone has directed more than $2.8 million into the contest since late February, while MAGA KY has spent about $2.7 million during the election cycle.

Some of the money backing these efforts comes from major donors. The MAGA KY group is backed by hedge fund billionaires Paul Singer and John Paulson, along with a group funded by Miriam Adelson.

Massie’s campaign has not been without resources of its own. His campaign and a pro Massie group called Kentucky First PAC have spent about $3.1 million on advertising to defend his seat.

Still, outside spending targeting Massie has significantly outpaced the money supporting him.

Mixed Reactions Among Kentucky Republicans

Despite the heavy spending and Trump’s involvement, Massie retains strong support among many local Republicans.

Steve Doan, a Republican state legislator who backs Massie, said the congressman’s independence is one of his strengths.

“He’s got that trust with people,” Doan said. “We know that he doesn’t always go with the party, but he usually has a good reason.”

But others believe Trump’s endorsement could dramatically reshape the race.

Tyson Riley, an information technology executive who attended Trump’s event in Kentucky, suggested the president’s support could change voters’ perceptions.

“I think Massie has turned colors over the last couple of years,” Riley said. “He’s kind of changed his ways.”

A Primary Battle With National Stakes

Massie’s district is heavily Republican and is not expected to be competitive in the general election. That means the Republican primary scheduled for May 19 will likely determine who ultimately represents the district in Congress.

While Massie has comfortably survived past challenges, the combination of Trump’s direct involvement, millions of dollars in outside spending, and a high profile challenger has created what could be the toughest race of his political career.

For Trump, the contest represents more than just a local election. It is a test of his influence within the Republican Party and his willingness to take on members of his own party who challenge his agenda.

Whether Massie’s loyal base can withstand that pressure will soon be decided at the ballot box.

President Donald Trump has dramatically intensified his effort to remove one of his most persistent Republican critics from Congress.
