The Sharia Free America Caucus says it was created to defend the U.S. Constitution, educate the public, and block any attempt to allow a foreign religious legal system to shape American law, culture, or immigration policy.

The Sharia Free America Caucus is a congressional group dedicated to opposing what its members call the spread or influence of Sharia law in the United States. According to its leaders, the caucus exists to make clear that American society is governed solely by the Constitution and U.S. law.

Speaking on Newsmax, Keith Self said the group sees education as its first responsibility. “We see our duty as to educate, first of all, our colleagues in Congress, then the American people, and then to pass legislation on the danger of Sharia,” Self said. He added that it is “not creeping across America, it seems to be roaring across America.”

The caucus was launched on December 18 by Self and fellow Texas Republican Chip Roy. Both men say Texas, particularly North Texas, has become a focal point for the issue.

“North Texas is ground zero of this invasion of Sharia,” Self said. “That’s why Chip Roy and I, two Texans, started this caucus. This legal system is actually incompatible with the U.S. Constitution.”

Notable Members and Growing Support

The caucus has expanded rapidly. Self has said it now includes 33 members from 18 states. Among those joining is Brandon Gill, who said Sharia law and radical Islam are incompatible with American values.

“Sharia law and radical Islam have no place in the United States,” Gill said. “There is a fundamental truth we have to recognise that not all cultures are created equal. Radical Islam is a political ideology with a very different idea of freedom of speech.”

Florida Congressman Randy Fine has become one of the caucus’s most outspoken members. Announcing his participation, Fine wrote, “We must be willing to call evil by its name.” In another statement, he said, “Sharia Law seeks to subjugate women and wage violence against non Muslims. Sharia Law seeks to destroy what makes America great.”

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has also echoed these warnings, saying, “America, we got to wake up. The enemy is inside the gates.”

Supporters argue that Sharia law is not merely a religious belief system but a comprehensive legal and cultural framework that conflicts with American principles. Self emphasized this distinction in his remarks.

“Islam is not a religion. It is a way of life. So Sharia is submission to Islam,” he said. “Our system, our laws, our culture, our heritage is built on individual freedoms.”

He contrasted the American legal tradition with Sharia by adding, “The Bill of Rights is very familiar, but all of our laws give individuals rights under the judicial system, under culture. Sharia is the opposite. It is submission to this very strict legal code.”

How Big a Problem Is Sharia Law in America

Critics of the caucus point out that there are no known efforts at the local, state, or federal level to impose Sharia law in the United States. Civil liberties groups argue that the Constitution already establishes itself as the supreme law of the land.

Caucus members respond that the threat is cultural and ideological rather than formal. At a recent press conference, Self warned, “If we do not fight back, Sharia will dominate our culture and America will no longer be America.”

He has also cited examples in Texas, including a proposed religiously exclusive housing development, as warning signs of what he believes could happen if the issue is ignored.

According to caucus members, Sharia law directly conflicts with core constitutional protections. Self has said that under Sharia there is no true freedom of religion or speech, no equal rights, and that women are treated as second class citizens.

Members argue that allowing Sharia based judgments or practices would undermine individual liberty and weaken the authority of the Constitution.

Legislative Priorities and Proposals

The caucus plans to advance legislation aimed at blocking Sharia from influencing U.S. law or immigration policy. These proposals include barring Sharia based judgments from U.S. courts, restricting tax exemptions for organizations allegedly tied to Sharia or extremist groups, and amending immigration law to deny entry to individuals who advocate Sharia over U.S. law.

Some measures would allow immigration benefits or visas to be revoked if a person is deemed an adherent of Sharia law. The caucus has also promoted legislation such as the No Shari’a Law Act and the Preserving a Sharia Free America Act.

Supporters say the caucus is defending the foundations of the American system. Self has warned that Sharia is one of the greatest threats facing the nation. Fine has described the effort as “a battle to preserve Western Civilization.”

Members frequently point to developments in Europe, particularly in the United Kingdom, as examples of what they believe happens when parallel legal systems are tolerated.

Opponents, including Muslim civil rights organizations and the American Civil Liberties Union, argue that the caucus unfairly targets Muslim Americans and fuels Islamophobic rhetoric. They note that Sharia broadly refers to personal religious practices and ethical guidance, not an enforced legal code.

Critics also argue that banning references to Sharia could infringe on First Amendment rights by preventing Muslims from citing their religious principles in legal agreements or court arguments, something members of other faiths are allowed to do.

A Debate That Is Likely to Grow

The Sharia Free America Caucus has made clear that it intends to keep this issue at the center of congressional debate. Supporters see it as a necessary defense of the Constitution and American values. Detractors see it as a response to a threat that does not exist in practice.

As the caucus pushes forward with legislation and public messaging, the debate over Sharia, religious freedom, and the limits of American law is likely to intensify.

A newly formed group of Republican lawmakers is drawing national attention with blunt warnings about what they describe as the growing influence of Sharia law in the United States.
