In Compton, protesters lit Molotov cocktails and threw them at federal officers as fireworks exploded overhead. The Associated Press reported that scenes like this have played out in several neighborhoods, leaving parts of the city on edge and local leaders scrambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
President Trump, seeing the destruction and violence, wasted no time in responding. He announced the deployment of 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines to restore order in Los Angeles. \u201cWe will not allow an American city to be invaded and conquered by a foreign enemy. That\u2019s what they are,\u201d Trump said in a powerful speech at Fort Bragg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He described Los Angeles as \u201ca trash heap\u201d where \u201centire neighborhoods [are] under control\u201d of criminals. \u201cWe will liberate Los Angeles and make it free, clean and safe again,\u201d he promised. Trump warned that any future protests would face \u201cequal or greater force\u201d than what was used over the weekend. \u201cWe\u2019re going to celebrate our country for a change,\u201d he said, highlighting a military parade in Washington, D.C., to showcase American strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While President Trump has moved to restore order, California leaders are protesting his actions. Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit to block the deployment of federal troops, calling it an illegal overreach. \u201cThis is an illegal and dangerous escalation,\u201d Newsom said. In testimony before the House Appropriations Committee, Hegseth said, \u201cI think we\u2019re entering another phase, especially under President Trump with his focus on the homeland.\u201d He made it clear that under Trump, the National Guard would play a bigger role in protecting American cities when local leaders refuse to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While focusing on the protests, Trump also used his Fort Bragg speech to announce that he would restore the original names of seven military bases that had been renamed by the Biden administration. \u201cCan you believe they changed that name in the last administration for a little bit?\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019ll forget all about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Defense Secretary Hegseth added, \u201cWe\u2019re not a college or a university. We\u2019re not interested in your woke garbage and political correctness,\u201d earning cheers from the crowd. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll praised Trump as \u201cthe greatest recruiter in our Army\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
