Democrats in Congress are trying to pass a bill that would expand the definition of hate crime to include discussion of \u201creplacement theory\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislation, which is sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), would criminalize speech that is found to have \u201cinspired\u201d a racially motivated crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draconian law would effectively make an individual responsible for someone else\u2019s crime if prosecutors were able to successfully argue that their political rhetoric was a motivating factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Leading Against White Supremacy Act of 2023 includes a \u201cconspiracy\u201d charge that someone would be guilty of if they were found to have published \u201cmaterial advancing white supremacy, white supremacist ideology, antagonism based on \u2018replacement theory,\u2019 or hate speech that vilifies or is otherwise directed against any non-white person or group\u201d on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If such content is \u201cread, heard, or viewed by a person who engaged in the planning, development, preparation or perpetration of a white supremacy inspired hate crime,\u201d even if misinterpreted, the creator of such content is guilty of conspiracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creator is also guilty if someone \u201cpredisposed to engaging in any action in furtherance of a white supremacy\u201d happens to stumble across it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics pointed out that \u201cvilifying\u201d someone can include language that is merely harshly critical and not racist or false, while passing a new \u2018hate speech\u2019 law that only targets white people is itself racist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201creplacement theory\u201d language is incredibly ironic given that Democrats routinely discuss replacement theory, the idea that whites in the US are deliberately being replaced by non-white immigrants, in the context of it being a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, when people on the right discuss the same issue only from a negative perspective, \u201creplacement theory\u201d suddenly because a dangerous conspiracy theory<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, last year, President Joe Biden\u00a0urged<\/a>\u00a0Americans to reject the same demographic \u201creplacement theory\u201d that he once cited as a \u201csource of our strength\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
