{"id":519,"date":"2023-01-18T11:56:05","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T16:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=519"},"modified":"2023-01-18T11:56:26","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T16:56:26","slug":"can-santos-survive-the-lies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=519","title":{"rendered":"CAN SANTOS SURVIVE THE LIES?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/punchingbagpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/63b478d62e6cb.webp\" alt=\"Can Santos Survive the Lies?\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/punchingbagpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/63b478d62e6cb.webp\" alt=\"Can Santos Survive the Lies?\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a couple of days, Congressman-elect George Santos was the subject of a lot of notoriety.\u00a0 The good kind.\u00a0 He was a gay Republican who took a New York Long Island congressional seat \u2013 one of three who flipped seats in that very blue region.\u00a0 They represented most of the margin by which the GOP took control of the House.\u00a0 Santos was a rising star in the Republican Party \u2013 or so they thought at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we see is not a rising star, however.&nbsp; It appears to be a flaming (no pun intended) meteor falling from the political firmament.&nbsp; His fame brought attention to his resume.&nbsp; He had fibbed.&nbsp; Oh, not an exaggeration here and there, but bald-faced lies here AND there.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtually everything in his published biography was untrue.&nbsp; He did not attend college.&nbsp; He did not work for Goldman Sachs.&nbsp; He was not Jewish \u2013 or even \u201cJew-ish,\u201d as he later explained. His family did not escape the Holocaust. The person on paper was a fictional character. The lies were so deep and so extensive that it would be fair to question whether he was even gay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He certainly was elected under false pretenses \u2013 but ironically, virtually all the lies were NOT reasons that generally influence votes.&nbsp; He was elected for what he said on the campaign trail in terms of issues. Voters decided to vote for Santos because of his stand on inflation, immigration, crime, and other Republican issues.&nbsp; Voters do not generally vote on personal resumes \u2013 the thing you see on the front page of campaign brochures along with photos of the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my long career as a political consultant, I have always advised clients put the personal biography stuff on the back of the brochure.&nbsp; For the most part, voters do not care about what college a candidate went to \u2026 or where they worked \u2026 or what hobbies they have. &nbsp; My mantra was \u201cput the issues up front.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, voters do not like to be lied to \u2026 period.&nbsp; And especially on such a grand scale.&nbsp; We can never know if Santos could have been elected by being honest \u2013 the poor boy making good is a great personal history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santos\u2019 fate is still uncertain.&nbsp; There are calls for his resignation \u2013 even among some Republicans.&nbsp; Democrats are calling for all sorts of investigations \u2013 by prosecutors and by the House.&nbsp; It would seem that a censure is possible \u2014 but being booted from the House is unlikely. &nbsp; That extreme punishment is generally reserved for members who commit serious crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the best of my recollection the last House member to be denied his seat was Congressman Adam Clayton Powell of New York.&nbsp; In 1967 he was barred from taking his seat for a series of misconducts \u2013 taking lady friends on congressional junkets \u2026 not paying a slander judgement \u2026 and for hanging out in Florida instead of in Washington during sessions. &nbsp; The voters of Harlem put him back in Congress in the next election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Santos may be in more trouble than he might have been because of the way he has handled the matter.&nbsp; He has been dismissing the criticism as unjustified.&nbsp; Yes, he made up his personal history, but it is no big deal.&nbsp; That was exactly the wrong way to address the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He should have admitted to his sin with an abject apology.&nbsp; Talk about how he has always felt inferior because of his minority background and sexual orientation.&nbsp; How he had low self-esteem and indulged in self-hate.&nbsp; That he did not create the phony Ron Santos for the campaign, but it was part of his weakness since childhood.&nbsp; (I am speculating, but I do think that may be the explanation.&nbsp; There always is one.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then should have made an abject apology to the voters \u2013 and committed to setting himself on a path of honesty in the future.&nbsp; He should have announced that he was entering treatment to specifically address his problem.&nbsp; Americans are very forgiving.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Speaker McCarthy could have taken a \u201clet\u2019s give him a chance\u201d approach \u2013 instead of seeming to hold off criticism or punitive action because he needed the vote.&nbsp; It is certainly arguable that McCarthy\u2019s response would have been different if he had a 20 to 30 seat margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of Congress have survived worse.&nbsp; Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank survived having his male lover running a prostitution operation out of the Congressman\u2019s apartment \u2013 and Massachusetts&nbsp; Congressman Gerry Studds survived statutory rape when he engaged in sex with an underage male page.&nbsp; Both went on to become highly \u201crespected\u201d members of the Democrat House Caucus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately for Santos, he chose the dismissive route over a sincere&nbsp;<em>mea culpa<\/em>.&nbsp; Rather than seek public sympathy and forgiveness, he projected the opposite \u2013 diminishing his transgression \u2026 appearing arrogant \u2026 and making himself even more unpopular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one sense, there is no excuse for the gross misrepresentations he advanced, but there can be a reason \u2013 one that could have been more acceptable to the voters.&nbsp; Is it too late to come clean and beg forgiveness?&nbsp; Never too late \u2013 but it will be a lot harder now.&nbsp; And so far, he does not seem to be inclined to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats will be chewing on the Santos issue for some time \u2013 knowing that their allies in the news media will keep the controversy on the front burner as part of their ongoing anti-Republican narratives.&nbsp;
