Data from Stanford University education professor Thomas Dee in&nbsp;<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/projects.apnews.com\/features\/2023\/missing-students-chronic-absenteeism\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partnership with The Associated Press<\/a><\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;found that over 25% of U.S. students missed at least 10% of the 2021-22 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many states, missing over 10% of the year is considered\u00a0<strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org\/childrens-health-safety-and-well-being\/childrens-access-care\/chronic-absenteeism\" target=\"_blank\">chronically absent<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. This problem has grown in the past few years. Before the pandemic, only 15% of students were considered chronically absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finances, transportation issues, anxiety, bullying and school staffing shortages are all contributing to kids staying home and missing school. However, attendance is not the only issue schools are facing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year in a post-pandemic poll about U.S. schooling, the\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationsreportcard.gov\/\">Nation\u2019s Report Card\u00a0<\/a><\/em><\/strong>found that even students attending classes are testing at record low levels.<br><br>The New York Post reported New York City public schools are seeing a 17% drop in\u00a0<strong><em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/08\/plunging-kindergarten-enrollment-highlights-whats-driving-kids-out-of-nyc-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\">kindergarten enrollment<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from the 2016-17 school year \u2014 almost 12,000 students.
