To ease the burden on battery&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/straightarrownews.com\/cc\/ford-gets-access-to-tesla-charging-tech-in-surprise-deal\/\">charging infrastructure<\/a>, a Northern California-based startup called Ample has been exploring&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23809811\/ev-battery-swap-ample-fisker-tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">battery swapping methods<\/a>&nbsp;that have proved successful elsewhere in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Biden administration has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/02\/15\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-standards-and-major-progress-for-a-made-in-america-national-network-of-electric-vehicle-chargers\/#:~:text=The%20path%20to%20net%2Dzero,%2C%20critical%20minerals%2C%20and%20materials.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded financial initiatives<\/a>&nbsp;aimed at spurring the growth of EV charging stations in the United States. However, experts are concerned that the build-out of charging stations might not keep up with the soaring demand from EV users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House\u2019s ambitious goal of having\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/08\/05\/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-steps-to-drive-american-leadership-forward-on-clean-cars-and-trucks\/\" target=\"_blank\">half of all vehicles sold<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. be electric by 2030 necessitates\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/electronics360.globalspec.com\/article\/18571\/1-7-million-ev-charging-stations-needed-in-us-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\">over a million charging stations<\/a>, which is approximately\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blinkcharging.com\/the-us-needs-20-times-more-ev-charging-stations-by-2030-or-else\/\" target=\"_blank\">20 times<\/a>\u00a0the current number available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consumers are already experiencing the impact of the charging station deficit, with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jdpower.com\/business\/resources\/ev-leasing-volumes-poised-surge-tax-rule-makes-it-cheaper-lease-buy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study by J.D. Power<\/a>&nbsp;revealing that the rate of EV adoption is nearly double that of charger installation growth. The research also found that one-fifth of American EV drivers reported experiencing problems with public charging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPublic charging is by far the least satisfying aspect of owning an electric vehicle,\u201d said Brent Gruber, executive director of global automotive research for J.D. Power.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ample is aiming to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/03\/ample-opens-5-ev-battery-swapping-stations-for-bay-area-uber-drivers.html#:~:text=But%20he%20said%3A%20%E2%80%9CWe',out%2C%20but%20possibly%20should%20have.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revolutionize the charging process<\/a>&nbsp;with its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ample.com\/2023\/05\/17\/introducing-amples-next-generation-swapping-station-a-whole-new-electrifying-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">battery swapping technology<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vehicles can drive into an Ample station where automated robots replace the depleted battery with a fully charged one. The entire process&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/roadshow\/news\/ev-battery-swaps-now-as-fast-as-filling-your-tank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">takes only five minutes,<\/a>&nbsp;significantly faster than the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/loans\/auto-loans\/electric-car-charge-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">half-hour required&nbsp;<\/a>for even the fastest traditional EV chargers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re making a major transition, a third of human consumption of energy is moving from one form to another,\u201d Ample co-founder and CEO Khaled Hassounah said. \u201cAnd any time we make that kind of change, we have to step back and rethink things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has also said its stations can be set up within three days and consume less energy from the power grid compared to some conventional charging stations. Ample\u2019s goal is to make its battery swapping system&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/battery-swapping-electric-car-ev\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9C%5BW%5De%20do%20it,needed%20for%20their%20upcoming%20drive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20% cheaper than using gasoline<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, Amply&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiibusiness.com\/amply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">primarily serves vehicle-fleet owners<\/a>&nbsp;and commercial operators, such as Uber drivers, at its 12 stations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Although this technology is not yet available for privately-owned vehicles, China, which boasts the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/latamobility.com\/en\/these-are-the-10-countries-with-most-electric-cars-in-circulation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most EVs in circulation worldwide<\/a>, has already adopted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/inside-chinas-electric-drive-swappable-car-batteries-2022-03-24\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar battery swapping systems<\/a>&nbsp;successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Battery swapping] is too convenient, too economical and too logical for this not to happen at scale in Europe and the United States,\u201d said Levi Tillemann, head of policy and international business at&nbsp;Ample. \u201cIt\u2019s a sort of magical thinking to imagine that this is a uniquely Chinese phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crucial factor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.protocol.com\/climate\/electric-vehicle-battery-swap-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contributing to China\u2019s success<\/a>&nbsp;is that its manufacturers have designed their EV models around a common battery pack format. In contrast, the U.S. lacks such a standardized approach, requiring Ample to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theevreport.com\/ample-partners-with-mitsubishi-fuso-on-battery-swapping-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborate with automakers<\/a>&nbsp;to integrate its battery swapping system into various vehicle models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe economics of swapping don\u2019t really work if you have to support a lot of different pack formats,\u201d said Sam Abuelsamid, principal research analyst for Guidehouse Insights. \u201cWithout battery standardization, the market just isn\u2019t there for swapping. Standardization isn\u2019t going to happen while battery technology is still evolving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why Ample\u2019s work has been focused on fleets of vehicles so far, as having a large number of the same vehicles with the same battery packs makes the company\u2019s business model easier.
