{"id":4878,"date":"2023-08-10T15:36:20","date_gmt":"2023-08-10T20:36:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4878"},"modified":"2023-08-10T15:36:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T20:36:20","slug":"food-prices-are-crazy-high-now-but-they-will-soon-go-a-lot-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4878","title":{"rendered":"Food Prices Are Crazy High Now, but They Will Soon Go a Lot Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load wp-image-4879\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60.png 750w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60-585x293.png 585w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60-293x147.png 293w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-60-390x195.png 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few years, we have seen food prices in the United States and other wealthy countries do things that they have never done before.&nbsp; Unfortunately, this is just the beginning.&nbsp; Global food supplies are getting tighter, and meanwhile global demand for food just continues to increase.&nbsp; For decades, many among the elite were optimistic that someday we would be able to eliminate global hunger completely because tremendous progress was being made.&nbsp; But then right around 2015 things started to reverse, and now the trend is very much going in the wrong direction.&nbsp; According to the United Nations,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/store-food-while-you-still-can-because-2-4-billion-people-already-do-not-have-enough-food-as-this-new-global-famine-accelerates\/\">2.4 billion people<\/a>&nbsp;did not have enough food to eat last year, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/store-food-while-you-still-can-because-2-4-billion-people-already-do-not-have-enough-food-as-this-new-global-famine-accelerates\/\">900 million of them<\/a>&nbsp;were facing severe food insecurity.&nbsp; Those numbers will almost certainly go even higher this year, because it is getting more difficult for poor countries to get the food that they need to feed their populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, just consider what is happening to rice prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rice is a core staple for billions of people around the globe, and India is the most important exporter of rice&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-66360064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">by a very wide margin<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">More than half of the rice imports in around 42 countries originate from India, and in many African nations, India\u2019s market share in rice imports surpasses 80%, according to Ifpri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">In top consuming countries in Asia \u2013 Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka, for example \u2013 the share of rice consumption in total calorie intake a day ranges from 40% to 67%.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that India has severely restricted rice exports, what are those nations going to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-india-66360064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to the BBC<\/a>, India\u2019s export ban \u201chas sparked worries about runaway global rice prices\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Indica white rice dominates around 70% of the global trade, and India has now ceased its export. This comes on top of the country\u2019s ban last year of exports of broken rice and a 20% duty on non-basmati rice exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Not surprisingly, July\u2019s export ban has sparked worries about runaway global rice prices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, this is already starting to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the price of Thai white rice is already&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/commodities\/rice-crisis-sends-prices-highest-levels-2008-amid-global-shortage-fears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cup over 50% since the start of 2022\u201d<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">On Wednesday, the Thai Rice Exporters Association revealed that the price of Thai white rice 5% broken, a key Asian benchmark, reached the highest level since Great Financial Crisis. This surge is mainly attributed to increasing fears of a global shortage due to the damaging effects of the El Nino weather phenomenon on Asian farmlands and India\u2019s recent decision to restrict certain rice exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Thai white rice 5% broken hit $648 per ton this week, the highest level since October 2008. Prices are up over 50% since the start of 2022.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course it isn\u2019t just the price of rice that is rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here in the United States, just about everything in our grocery stores is becoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/discernreport.com\/costco-reports-250-price-hikes-on-food-items-as-supplies-run-out-at-stores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a lot more expensive<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Americans are noticing a lot of sold-out notes on Costco shelves in the past few weeks. Shortages of household supplies and basic grocery items seem to be rapidly spreading across Costco warehouses. However, most of the complaints have been published by shoppers that just can\u2019t believe the price hikes they\u2019re seeing at their local stores. One major example of this was the 250% increase in the price of 40-packs of Kirkland-branded water bottles. One Redditor reported that the bulk buy, which cost $1.44 as recently as a year ago, now costs $4.99.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cYeah that used to be the case at the beginning of the year, just checked yesterday, and $4.99, ridiculous,\u201d user u\/ghx16 wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">User jasonsparks19 said that crab legs have more than doubled in price over the past year: \u201cKing crab legs went from $23\/lb to $48\/lb.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">That\u2019s a 110% increase. It has been difficult for shoppers to find chicken nuggets in stock at Costco, as they are often sold out in the frozen section due to the high demand. They used to cost $13 for a four-pound bag, but are now going for $19.99, causing some customers to express their displeasure with the price hike on Reddit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cI saw them today for the first time in a while too. But for now, many in the western world are completely ignoring the millions upon millions of deeply suffering people on the other side of the planet.
