Their latest move in the world of education will no doubt find its way seeping into other state boards of education as the blue states tend to fall in line after their west coast leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden State approved a new math curriculum focusing on equity and social justice and a little less on, you know\u2026numbers. The new math framework for California students is sold to improve the dismal math scores in the state and help elevate minority students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like most left-wing plans sold to help minorities, this one will do nothing but continue to hurt them and every other student that this curriculum will touch. This highly contested framework will be in place for eight years, as the curriculum isn\u2019t up for adjustment until then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The curriculum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleareducation.com\/articles\/2023\/07\/21\/california_math_framework_proven_methods_vs_political_ideology_967616.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pushes<\/a>&nbsp;math teachers in the state to hold the opinion that math has a role in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201c\u2026the power structures and privileges in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It further recommends that math teachers take a \u201ctrauma-informed pedagogy\u201d within the curriculum. This concept assumes that all students are crippled on an emotional level by our society, which according to this ideology is racist, sexist, and violent due to its capitalistic nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because nothing is more racist and American than the universal concept of arithmetic. The framework&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/california\/article_469e017c-281c-11ee-8274-cf1730f7da4c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">includes<\/a>&nbsp;what is dubbed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cfive important components of classroom instruction that can meet the needs of students who are diverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These five components are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>plan teaching around big ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use open, engaging tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>teach toward social justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>invite student questions and conjectures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>prioritize reasoning and justification<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you weren\u2019t paying close attention, the garbage they sandwiched between generally good concepts would slip right by you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The final document on the new California math curriculum is 100 pages of example lessons.<br><br>Not one of the them \u2014 not ONE \u2014 encourages students practicing math problems<\/p>&mdash; Daniel Buck (@MrDanielBuck) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrDanielBuck\/status\/1680932269026934786?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less teaching, more training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this heap of junk brought to you by overpaid and overeducated education bureaucrats are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleareducation.com\/articles\/2023\/07\/21\/california_math_framework_proven_methods_vs_political_ideology_967616.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">examples<\/a>&nbsp;of good math projects, including my favorite: Math Identity Rainbows. According to the curriculum, a math identity rainbow is created by having students weave together six different colored strings to show they are part of a \u201cclassroom community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s fair to say California won\u2019t be producing the next rocket scientists anytime soon. The curriculum drones on about the need to teach around \u201cbig ideas\u201d through \u201cstudent-led inquiry.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn\u2019t seem like a terrible idea. I had a fantastic AP Statistics teacher who let us use sports information to prove that we understood the course material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that\u2019s different from what this curriculum is referring to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cbig ideas\u201d they refer to are the social justice causes that the left loves to champion. The curriculum&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/california\/article_469e017c-281c-11ee-8274-cf1730f7da4c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argues<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cTeaching toward social justice can play an important role in shifting students\u2019 perspectives on mathematics as well as their sense of belonging as mathematics thinkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was pretty good at math back in the day, but I don\u2019t know what a \u2018mathematics thinker\u2019 is. What happened to showing how math plays a vital role in daily life, such as with money, engineering, design, medicine, art, and quite literally everything?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authors of this curriculum go on to say that it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/california-approves-new-math-guidelines-encourage-teaching-toward-social-justice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empowers<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201c\u2026learners with tools to examine inequities and address important issues in their lives and communities through mathematics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah, I see now; when solving for x: 2x \u2013 4 = x \u2013 10, then x = I\u2019m a racist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cA color-blind teaching approach allows systemic inequities to continue,\u201d the authors contend, and it\u2019s a teacher\u2019s job to develop a \u201csociopolitical consciousness\u201d in their students. To do so, math teachers must reject \u201cwhiteness\u201d and inject \u201csocial justice\u201d into their teaching. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lbEXa3InT5\">https:\/\/t.co\/lbEXa3InT5<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Sharma (@bansisharma) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bansisharma\/status\/1683819835392770052?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No more Derivatives&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides the ridiculous social justice jargon woven throughout the new math curriculum, the other and arguably more dangerous aspect is the push to lower the bar for all California students. Not only does the framework encourage teachers to instruct algebra \u201cvisually and through words\u201d versus through, you know, actual algebraic equations \u2013 it flat-out discourages algebra as a class altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s right, the California State Board of Education doesn\u2019t think algebra should be taught before High School and also believes students should have the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/teaching-toward-social-justice-californias-new-math-framework-aims-to-create-equitable-outcomes-between-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">option<\/a>&nbsp;to take what is called \u201cmath-lite data science\u201d courses. Now I get it; when was the last time you\u2019ve had to solve for x?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Literally, every day of your life, you solve for x; you do it most of the time effortlessly in your head. Why? Because you were taught algebra.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let\u2019s say this isn\u2019t a big deal; after all, these kids can get algebra in their first year of High School. The problem behind that thinking is that to take pre-calculus or even AP calculus in high school; you need to take algebra in middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a minimum, most colleges require pre-calculus for specific degree programs\u2014bye-bye opportunities for higher education and hello continued cycle of poverty.\u00a0Talk about systemic racism!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">California woke social justice warrior math coming. <br><br>Numbers not allowed? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IHjxUtuqDO\">pic.twitter.com\/IHjxUtuqDO<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Wall Street Silver (@WallStreetSilv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WallStreetSilv\/status\/1681180259616530433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everyone is equally below average<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to educational dumpster fires like this one in California, America\u2019s youth continue to be forced into mediocrity. In California, only a third of all students and 23% of all 8th graders are considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/24\/us\/math-reading-scores-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cproficient\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;in math.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody honestly believes that any of the practices mentioned above will help any student, especially with the discouragement of memorizing multiplication tables and good old-fashioned math drills. One of the best math teachers I ever had was Mr. Gimple, who would run math drill after math drill with me repeatedly on an overhead projector until I finally understood the problem and, most importantly, how to find the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">California also wants to get rid of \u201cstudent tracking\u201d \u2013 which is allowing those with an aptitude for mathematics to take accelerated courses \u2013 to eliminate differences in \u201cschool experiences\u201d to \u201csupport equitable student mathematics success.\u201d I hate to break it to you, liberals, but some people just aren\u2019t good at math.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it\u2019s because they don\u2019t try hard enough; sometimes, it\u2019s just a lack of natural ability. While I was good at math, there is a reason I write political commentary versus working for Elon Musk at SpaceX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lowering the bar doesn\u2019t create more opportunities; all that does is create a foundation of helplessness. Raising the bar is how you elevate those who wish to be elevated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like reading is a universal equalizer; math is a universal concept.
