Musk also serves as CEO of Space X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the company has lost 50% of its advertising revenue and faces a negative cash flow, meaning there is more money being spent on expenses than brought in through revenue, Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1680082007873953794?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1680082007873953794%7Ctwgr%5Ebd439c88b8668124c6991958694e18e53b96e1df%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbsnews.com%2Fnews%2Ftwitter-traffic-falls-under-elon-musk-threads-mastodon-bluesky-competition%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to its acquisition by Musk, Twitter made the vast majority of its revenue through advertising but many large companies have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/twitters-verification-plan-works-facing-criticism\/story?id=92794983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pulled<\/a>&nbsp;ads from the platform amid what some have described as a rise of explicit and hateful content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, X faces a new threat from ascendant social media platform\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/threads-meta-owned-app-set-twitter\/story?id=100659749\" target=\"_blank\">Threads<\/a>, owned by Facebook parent-company Meta. Threads reached 100 million users within five days, achieving a record as the fastest app ever to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By comparison, Twitter boasted 238 million users before Musk took the company private in October, the company said in an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/twitter-announces-second-quarter-2022-results-301591530.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earnings report<\/a>&nbsp;last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What role did Musk play in the rebrand?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk&#8217;s interest in the letter &#8220;X&#8221; traces back more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1999, Musk launched an online payments and banking company called X.com, which later merged with PayPal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musk repurchased the URL &#8220;X.com&#8221; in 2017.
