{"id":4495,"date":"2023-07-21T13:34:52","date_gmt":"2023-07-21T18:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4495"},"modified":"2023-07-21T13:34:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T18:34:52","slug":"nyc-agrees-to-pay-13-million-to-protesters-arrested-beaten-during-george-floyd-riots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4495","title":{"rendered":"NYC Agrees to Pay $13 Million to Protesters Arrested, Beaten During George Floyd Riots"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New York City has agreed to pay $13 million to protesters who were arrested or beaten during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/tag\/george-floyd\/\">George Floyd<\/a>&nbsp;demonstrations, as part of a lawsuit settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the lawsuit settlement agreement, the city will be paying $13 million, or almost $10,000 each to 1,300 people who were arrested or mistreated by the police during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/tag\/protests\/\">demonstrations<\/a>&nbsp;in the aftermath of Floyd\u2019s death, according to the plaintiff\u2019s attorneys, the New York Post&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/20\/nyc-to-pay-13m-to-blm-protestors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd was an unarmed, African-American man who died on May 25, 2020 after a police officer kneeled on him and pinned him to the ground. As Floyd was pinned, he could be heard saying, \u201cI can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was so disorganized, but so intentional,\u201d Adama Sow, one of the plaintiffs said of the arrests, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sow alleged the group of protesters they were with had been cornered by police officers, had their hands restrained in zip ties until they had turned purple, and were placed on a hot bus for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the lawsuit, which was filed against former New York City Mayor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/tag\/bill-de-blasio\/\">Bill de Blasio<\/a>, former New York City Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, and various other police officers, many protesters who were just exercising \u201ctheir constitutional rights\u201d to protest had been \u201ccorralled into places where they could not escape,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawyers for the plaintiffs also argued that while the protesters had been \u201cphysically restrained\u201d they had been placed in \u201cdangerously close quarters\u201d while the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/tag\/covid-19\/\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic was happening, something that didn\u2019t happen at similar demonstrations, according to the court filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shea defended the actions of police officers and labeled the demonstrations as \u201cunusually violent,\u201d according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-minneapolis-police-new-york-chief\/new-york-city-police-chief-defends-police-driving-into-protesters-idUSKBN23T2GT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was some of the worst rioting that occurred in our city in recent memory,\u201d Shea said of the demonstrations, describing how people had thrown objects such as bricks or bottles and resorted to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/protesters-burn-down-wendys-atlanta-police-shooting\/\">violent<\/a>\u00a0acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd\u2019s brother, Terrence,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/floyds-brother-denounces-violence-urges-do-this-peacefully\/\">spoke out<\/a>&nbsp;regarding the violence which was occurring at some of the protests, calling for people to \u201cswitch it up\u201d and be peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The settlement agreement, which is still awaiting approval from a judge, pertains to 18 different demonstrations which took place in Brooklyn and Manhattan between May 28 and June 4, 2020, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roughly 300 people who were beaten by police during a June 4, 2020 demonstration were\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-york-city-pay-black-lives-matter-protesters-21k-each-over-rights-violations-2020\" target=\"_blank\">given<\/a>\u00a0$21,500 each from a previous $6 million settlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Article: <a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/nyc-agrees-to-pay-13-million-to-protesters-arrested-beaten-during-george-floyd-riots\/\">https:\/\/ijr.com\/nyc-agrees-to-pay-13-million-to-protesters-arrested-beaten-during-george-floyd-riots\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ijr.com\/author\/eweibel\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York City has agreed to pay $13 million to protesters who were arrested or beaten during the&nbsp;George Floyd&nbsp;demonstrations, as part of a lawsuit settlement.
