{"id":4354,"date":"2023-07-14T13:07:48","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T18:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4354"},"modified":"2023-07-14T13:08:04","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T18:08:04","slug":"fda-approves-over-the-counter-contraceptive-wont-say-if-recommended-for-transgender-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4354","title":{"rendered":"FDA Approves Over-the-Counter Contraceptive, Won\u2019t Say If Recommended for \u2018Transgender Women\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-1024x532.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load wp-image-4355\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-1024x532.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-1024x532.png 1024w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-770x400.png 770w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-293x152.png 293w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65-390x203.png 390w, https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/image-65.png 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not directly answer if its newly approved over-the-counter contraceptive could be safely used by males who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/tag\/transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">identify as \u201ctransgender women.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA announced Thursday that it has approved the first ever over-the-counter contraceptive pill, Opill (norgestrel).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAvailability of nonprescription Opill may help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and their potential negative impacts,\u201d the FDA said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-first-nonprescription-daily-oral-contraceptive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Daily Signal asked the FDA if it approves or encourages the pill for biological males who identify as women or for women who identify as men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA responded with this: \u201cNorgestrel is generally safe for most people who could get pregnant.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines on biological males chestfeeding.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/06\/mothers-swing-cdc-equating-male-nipple-secretions-breast-milk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The CDC claimed<\/a>&nbsp;not only that men can chestfeed but also that they can give birth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA would not directly say if it considered men able to become pregnant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/tag\/fda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The FDA\u2019s approval<\/a>&nbsp;of Opill means that clients do not need a prescription signed by a doctor or other medical provider to purchase this contraceptive, but can walk into their nearest drugstore or grocery store and buy it off the shelf, or purchase it online and have it mailed to them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for a drug company to get its nonprescription product approved, \u201cthe FDA requires that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2023\/017031Orig1s041SumR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">applicant demonstrate<\/a>&nbsp;that the product can be used by consumers safely and effectively, relying only on the nonprescription drug labeling without any assistance from a health care professional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perrigo, a drug company that specializes in producing over-the-counter medication, sponsored Opill through its recently acquired&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hra-pharma.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health care company HRA Pharma<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Karen Minerve Murry, the FDA official who sent a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/nda\/2023\/017031Orig1s041SumR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">memorandum<\/a>&nbsp;in favor of the pill, said the FDA should approve the drug because women no longer have as much access to abortion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Murry\u2019s reasoning, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, women became more concerned that states would restrict their ability to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/tag\/abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kill their unborn children through abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrevention of pregnancy has become even more important in recent times, as increasingly, women in some parts of the U.S. have few options once an unintended pregnancy occurs,\u201d Murry wrote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the FDA needs to approve contraceptives like this pill to give women more options to avoid motherhood, Murry reasoned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the pill causes adverse effects in some women, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/jun\/21\/roe-reversal-dobbs-decision-birth-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weight gain and depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these negative side effects,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Evie_Magazine\/status\/1679195014155452416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more women are noticing<\/a>&nbsp;the connection between taking oral contraceptives and their increased chances of contracting cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/hormones\/oral-contraceptives-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The National Cancer Institute<\/a>, a website run by the National Institutes of Health, says on its webpage titled \u201cOral Contraceptives and Cancer Risk\u201d that \u201coverall \u2026 studies have provided consistent evidence that the risks of breast and cervical cancers are increased in women who use oral contraceptives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/11\/22\/doctors-medical-groups-sue-fda-in-bid-to-halt-sales-of-abortion-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The FDA does not address<\/a>&nbsp;in its press release whether Opill, a \u201cprogestin-only oral contraceptive pill,\u201d has been known to cause cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most contraceptive pills that have been known to cause cancer do so because they contain estrogen,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12822069\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studies show<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One&nbsp;study performed by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4706804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4706804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Library&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4706804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of Medicine<\/a>&nbsp;in 2016 says \u201cunlike studies of other oral contraceptives, studies indicate that progestin-only formulations do not increase the risk of breast cancer, although the literature is hampered by small sample sizes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to not sharing, or not knowing, if Opill can cause cancer,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/04\/14\/appeals-court-reinstates-safety-restrictions-abortion-drug-while-lawsuit-against-its-fda-approval-continues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the FDA claims<\/a>&nbsp;that Opill is even \u201cmore effective than currently available nonprescription contraceptive methods in preventing unintended pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An FDA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/opill-0075mg-oral-norgestrel-tablet-information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">information webpage on Opill<\/a>&nbsp;says, \u201cbased on the initial clinical trials of norgestrel tablets, the perfect-use effectiveness rate can be as high as 98%, meaning only 2 in 100 women will become pregnant in a year of use.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the FDA also warns against using Opill as a morning-after pill or as an abortion drug.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOpill is not for use as emergency contraception and does not prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex,\u201d the FDA wrote in the press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/13\/fda-approves-counter-contraceptive-wont-say-recommended-transgender-women\/\">https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/07\/13\/fda-approves-counter-contraceptive-wont-say-recommended-transgender-women\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not directly answer if its newly approved over-the-counter contraceptive could be safely used by males who&nbsp;identify as \u201ctransgender women.\u201d The FDA announced Thursday that it has approved the first ever over-the-counter contraceptive pill, Opill (norgestrel).&nbsp;
