{"id":4160,"date":"2023-07-03T11:53:26","date_gmt":"2023-07-03T16:53:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4160"},"modified":"2023-07-03T11:53:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T16:53:26","slug":"democrats-suggest-use-of-1965-law-as-plan-b-for-student-loan-forgiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=4160","title":{"rendered":"Democrats suggest use of 1965 law as plan B for student loan forgiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politicians are describing the Supreme Court\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/straightarrownews.com\/cc\/supreme-court-strikes-down-biden-student-loan-forgiveness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision to strike down<\/a>&nbsp;President Biden\u2019s student loan forgiveness as everything from a \u201cvictory for common sense\u201d to \u201chypocritical.\u201d Now, Democrats want to find an alternative to the plan that would have wiped away $10,000 to $20,000 in student loan debt for 43 million people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Democrats are suggesting President Biden use the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/COMPS-765\/pdf\/COMPS-765.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Higher Education Act<\/a>\u00a0as a plan B.\u00a0The Higher Education Act is a nearly 1,000-page law passed in 1965. Progressives including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have said the president could use it to order the Department of Education to stop collecting student loans.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is very important to note this SCOTUS ruling does NOT remove Biden\u2019s ability to pursue student loan forgiveness.<br><br>The Biden Admin can use the HEA (Higher Ed Act) &#8211; our position from the start &#8211; to continue loan forgiveness before payments resume. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has also advocated for that plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe hypocrisy is clear: As justices accept lavish, six-figure gifts, they don\u2019t dare to help Americans saddled with student loan debt, instead siding with the powerful, big-monied interests,\u201d Schumer tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans celebrated and said the Supreme Court made the right decision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of putting together a real plan to lower the costs of higher education, President Biden put forward an unserious scheme to force 87% of Americans who do not have student loan debt to bear the costs of the 13% of Americans who do,\u201d Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been bipartisan calls to find a way to lower the cost of higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s time the administration work with Congress on policies that address the root causes of high tuition and provide the public with better access to more educational opportunities,\u201d Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House said 90% of the forgiveness would have gone to people making less than $75,000 per year.
