{"id":3947,"date":"2023-06-23T12:00:50","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3947"},"modified":"2023-06-23T12:00:51","modified_gmt":"2023-06-23T17:00:51","slug":"nhl-moves-to-keep-the-focus-on-the-game-players-will-no-longer-wear-pride-jerseys-during-warm-ups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3947","title":{"rendered":"NHL Moves to \u2018Keep the Focus on the Game\u2019 \u2013 Players Will No Longer Wear Pride Jerseys During Warm-Ups"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/nhl\/article\/nhl-board-of-governors-notebook-pride-nights-salary-cap-and-team-valuations\/\">Sportsnet<\/a>&nbsp;that NHL players will no longer wear themed warmup jerseys next season, including Pride paraphernalia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHL came under fire this season as players, like&nbsp;Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2023\/01\/philadelphia-flyers-player-boycotts-woke-teams-pride-night-refuses-wear-lgbtq-warmup-jersey-video\/\">boycotted&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cPride Night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provorov, a devout Russian Orthodox Christian,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2023\/01\/nhl-issues-statement-players-decision-boycott-pride-night-players-free-decide-initiatives-support\/\">refused to wear his team\u2019s gay pride jersey<\/a>&nbsp;saying he made a choice to stay true to himself and his faith, \u201cI respect everybody and I respect everybody\u2019s choices. &nbsp;My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Flyers?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Flyers<\/a> Ivan Provorov on his Pride Night pregame boycott :<br>\u201cMy choice is to stay true to myself and my religion.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YSFKvkyEJC\">pic.twitter.com\/YSFKvkyEJC<\/a><\/p>&mdash; End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EndWokeness\/status\/1672109268907053057?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 23, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, the NHL&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegatewaypundit.com\/2023\/01\/nhl-issues-statement-players-decision-boycott-pride-night-players-free-decide-initiatives-support\/\">issued a statement<\/a>&nbsp;affirming that players have the right to choose which causes they support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, according to Bettman, it has all become too much of a distraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10080323-nhl-teams-wont-wear-specialty-warmup-jerseys-after-pride-night-controversies\">Bleacher Report shares:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt\u2019s taking away from the fact that all of our clubs, in some form or another, host nights in honor of various groups or causes, and we\u2019d rather them continue to get the appropriate attention that they deserve and not be a distraction,\u201d Bettman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">When Friedman expressed concern about the NHL\u2019s decision being made during Pride Month, Bettman agreed the concern was \u201clegitimate,\u201d but he said Pride Nights have been \u201cundermined by the distraction in terms of which teams, which players.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cThis way, we\u2019re keeping the focus on the game, and on these specialty nights, we\u2019re going to be focused on the cause,\u201d Bettman said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: NHL announces teams will no longer wear LGBTQ Pride jerseys!! <br><br>SANITY IS COMING BACK TO SPORTS!!<br> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nz6hPugAmw\">pic.twitter.com\/nz6hPugAmw<\/a><\/p>&mdash;
