Some say banking online actually helps them.&nbsp;(Mills Hayes\/Fox News \/ Fox News)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In downtown Minneapolis, Eli Amaris was on his way to Target when he said everything he\u2019s learned about money has been self-taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have a bank account, but I try not to touch it, and when I spend, I like to use cash,&#8221; Amaris said, adding that budgeting was hard when he didn\u2019t have cash because the money showing on his digital bank account didn\u2019t feel real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Times are tough and 70% of Americans say&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/official-polls\/fox-news-poll-views-economy-are-going-bad-worse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">they\u2019re stressed about finances<\/a>&nbsp;right now, according to a CNBC report from April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m more able to stop myself when I see, visually see and feel, how much I have left,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/931\/523\/Clip0059.MXF_.22_44_35_19.Still001.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"Four twenty dollar bills lay on a table\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/931\/523\/Clip0059.MXF_.22_44_35_19.Still001.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"Four twenty dollar bills lay on a table\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Gen Z shoppers who use cash say it can be a hassle to try and pay friends back, because many prefer receiving money online. Other issues are when stores only allot a certain amount of registers that will take cash.&nbsp;(Mills Hayes\/Fox News \/ Fox News)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vlad Winghert, 21, said he prints cash out when he gets paid by mobile deposit, so he can sort it for rent, food or rideshare apps. He said it&#8217;s helpful for him to physically feel his money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This amount of cash can only be used for this, and I can\u2019t go past it,&#8221; Winghert said while describing his process of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/savings\" target=\"_blank\">saving money with cash.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University of St. Thomas finance professor Dave Vang said it can be helpful to divide cash into envelopes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think it is a well-worn trick that&#8217;s been used for a long time for budgeting. It is certainly becoming more popular now,&#8221; Vang said. &#8220;It\u2019s actually a well-known practice among people dealing with people who are mentally handicapped to use cash.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vang said &#8220;higher and higher percentages of people are living paycheck to paycheck,&#8221; and when you\u2019re living paycheck to paycheck, it&#8217;s important to make sure you know exactly where every dollar is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;cash stuffing&#8221; has popped up on Gen Z\u2019s favorite search engine, TikTok, and is similar to the cash in envelopes method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charlotte Hall has over 160,000 followers combined between her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/social-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok and Instagram accounts.<\/a>&nbsp;She got into cash stuffing after a $1,200 car repair bill a year ago caught her off guard. She wanted to make a budget that would allow her not to go off track if there was an unexpected bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You take your variable expenses, things like your hair, your nails, your groceries, your gas, and you take those monies out in cash, and you allot certain amounts of those monies to the envelopes, and you only spend what&#8217;s in the envelope,&#8221; Hall said, explaining the concept of cash stuffing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She continued: &#8220;You are setting limits for yourself, but you are able to physically hold the cash in your hand, which tells your brain I better stop spending at a certain point.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/931\/523\/genz2.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"Someone puts a $20 bill inside a white envelope\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a57.foxnews.com\/static.foxbusiness.com\/foxbusiness.com\/content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/931\/523\/genz2.jpg?ve=1&amp;tl=1\" alt=\"Someone puts a $20 bill inside a white envelope\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>People looking to save money often find social media influencers who give money saving tips online. The Credit Karma report shows 72% of Gen Z adults are aware of cash stuffing and 30% use it themselves.&nbsp;&nbsp;(Mills Hayes\/Fox News \/ Fox News)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hall said the people who interact with her page the most are Gen Zers and Millennials who live in New York City or those who are\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/personal-finance\/cash-stuffing-how-does-it-work\" target=\"_blank\">budgeting for a family.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The best way to leverage your variable expenses is to try to decrease some of your fixed expenses. And one of the ways I teach to decrease your fixed expenses is to call the companies that you are in business with and ask for discounts.&#8221; Hall said. &#8220;Some people don&#8217;t know that they have discounts available.
