He is the first Minnesota inmate to be relocated to a different prison based on gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/trans-inmate-will-move-to-womens-facility-after-suing-minnesota-doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FOX 9<\/a>, the settlement, announced last week, includes a financial compensation of $495,000 to be awarded to Lusk, which includes about $250,000 in legal fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the monetary settlement, the Minnesota DOC has agreed to strengthen its policies surrounding transgender inmates, including medical treatment and the right of transgender or gender non-conforming individuals to request a facility that corresponds with their gender identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverybody needs to come together in unity and embrace positive change. I believe we have made a big step toward allowing people to express who they truly are, and bring some sort of peace and happiness to their lives,\u201d Lusk said in response to the settlement released by Gender Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis journey has brought extreme challenges, and I have endured so much. My hope is that nobody has to go through the same set of circumstances. I relied on my faith, and I never gave up hope. I can truly say that I am a strong, proud, transgender woman, and my name is Christina Lusk,\u201d Lusk added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FOX News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/transgender-inmate-transferred-womens-facility-get-surgery-after-lawsuit\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">After beginning cross-sex hormones in 2009, Lusk changed names in 2018 and was conferring with doctors about surgical options&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>before getting arrested<\/u><\/a>. The inmate had undergone \u201ctop surgery\u201d before going to jail, and was \u201con the verge of scheduling\u201d a vaginoplasty, according to the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Lusk filed a grievance with the DOC after department medical director James Amsterdam reviewed Lusk\u2019s case and determined that Lusk should not be allowed to receive genital surgery while incarcerated, but \u201ccould pursue that after release,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-size:18px\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The lawsuit, which was filed on Lusk\u2019s behalf by the St. Paul-based advocacy group Gender Justice, alleged that Lusk was sexually abused by the male inmates at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Moose Lake and demanded Lusk be treated as female and moved to a women\u2019s facility.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cInmates would heckle her, heckle her roommates\u2026 call her \u2018it,\u2019 that sort of thing,\u201d Gender Justice legal director Jess Braverman said, according to FOX 9. \u201cAnd then there were staff who would say things to her, such as, \u2018You know, you\u2019re a man in a men\u2019s prison. I\u2019m not going to treat you like a woman.
