{"id":3654,"date":"2023-06-02T14:18:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T19:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3654"},"modified":"2023-06-02T14:18:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T19:18:42","slug":"feds-want-drunk-driving-detection-systems-installed-in-all-new-cars-to-prevent-vehicle-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3654","title":{"rendered":"Feds want drunk driving detection systems installed in all new cars to \u2018prevent vehicle operation\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a report that flew under the radar late last year, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/investigations\/Pages\/HWY21FH003.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;for drunk driving detection systems to be installed in every new car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After an impaired driver killed nine people \u2013 including seven children \u2013 in a tragic New Year\u2019s Day car crash in California, the NTSB recommended \u201call new vehicles be equipped with passive vehicle-integrated alcohol impairment detection systems, advanced driver monitoring systems, or a combination thereof; the systems must be capable of preventing or limiting vehicle operation if driver impairment by alcohol is detected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NTSB said drunk driving is the leading cause of highway crashes involving injury, and in 2020, about one in three traffic deaths involved a drunk driver. The board also noted that \u201cimpaired driving crashes\u201d are increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause people who are impaired by alcohol often have compromised judgment and indulge in increased risk-taking, interventions are \u200b\u200bneeded that do not require decision-making by impaired drivers,\u201d NTSB said. \u201cVehicle-integrated passive alcohol detection technologies that prevent or limit impaired drivers from operating their vehicles have significant lifesaving potential; however, development of the technologies has been slow, and additional action is needed to accelerate progress in implementing these technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NTSB\u2019s current \u201cmost wanted list\u201d of transportation safety improvements&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/Advocacy\/mwl\/Pages\/mwl-21-22\/mwl-hs-03.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cimpaired driving is 100% preventable\u201d and insists the .08 blood alcohol content (BAC) standard is too high for safe driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>States must lower the BAC limit to .05, NTSB said, adding that only Utah has taken such action so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTechnology could\u2019ve prevented this heartbreaking crash \u2014 just as it can prevent the tens of thousands of fatalities from impaired-driving and speeding-related crashes we see in the U.S. annually,\u201d NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said at the time,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-09-20\/california-crash-spurs-call-for-new-cars-to-detect-drunk-drivers\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a>\u00a0the Los Angeles Times. \u201cWe need to implement the technologies we have right here, right now, to save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Article:<a href=\"https:\/\/americanmilitarynews.com\/2023\/06\/feds-wants-drunk-driving-detection-systems-installed-in-all-new-cars-to-prevent-vehicle-operation\/\">https:\/\/americanmilitarynews.com\/2023\/06\/feds-wants-drunk-driving-detection-systems-installed-in-all-new-cars-to-prevent-vehicle-operation\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a report that flew under the radar late last year, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)&nbsp;called&nbsp;for drunk driving detection systems to be installed in every new car.
