Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence why they decided to join the order of drag nuns, and most of them will tell you it\u2019s because they felt&nbsp;<em>the<\/em>&nbsp;<em>call<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Tootie Toot (glitter green lips, dark beard, emerald cocktail dress) felt it like a ton of bricks when she walked into a leather bar where several sisters had assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Unity (tangerine veil, tangerine eye makeup, furry tangerine stole) felt it like a tingling mix of fire, ice and electricity when she happened upon the original order of sisters blessing the crowd at a pride parade in San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Sister Candy Cide of the Immaculate Misconception (long-sleeve black dress, white bib, several strands of fake pearls) was struck by the feeling of power emanating from a group of visiting drag nuns walking down the street at an L.A. Pride event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was still feeling the guilt that I was going to let my parents down because of who I was,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I found out the message of the sisters was about removing stigmatic guilt and repairing people\u2019s joy, I was like, \u2018I need to do that for myself, and I need to do it for other people too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/e311105d42e49749394d981b71c66bac7eb37dc5.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun with white fact paint stands outdoors\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/e311105d42e49749394d981b71c66bac7eb37dc5.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun with white fact paint stands outdoors\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With their signature white makeup, oversize wimples (they call them Hoobie Doobies) and supersize lashes, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence turn heads wherever they go. But the group\u2019s national profile soared to new heights recently when the Dodgers announced that they would recognize the sisters with a community heroes award,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-19\/sisters-of-perpetual-indulgence-dodgers-pride-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rescinded the award<\/a>&nbsp;after pushback from conservative Catholic groups and then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/story\/2023-05-22\/dodgers-apologize-invite-sisters-perpetual-indulgence-pride-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reinstated it<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 all over the course of a whirlwind few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters reaccepted the award as Dodgers leadership&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/press-release\/press-release-dodgers-statement-on-lgbtq-pride-night-x6071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vowed to better educate themselves<\/a>. Instead of bitterness, the sisters&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.ladragnuns.org\/press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">offered up a benediction<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>May the games be blessed!<\/em><br><em>May the players be blessed!<\/em><br><em>May the fans be blessed!<\/em><br><em>May the beer and hot dogs flow forth in tasty abundance!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some might have found it difficult to forgive the Dodgers, that\u2019s not the sisters\u2019 way, said Sister June Cleavage, a cisgender female member of the group. (The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence welcome people of \u201cevery gender, race, romantic alignment, class, species, phylum, beverage preference, &amp; sexual proclivity,\u201d according to their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.ladragnuns.org\/the-calling-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t come to this organization without understanding, without compassion and without having fought these kinds of battles before on a smaller scale,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it comes with the calling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a recent spring evening, 11 sisters gathered at Elysian Park in the shadow of Dodger Stadium in full regalia to discuss the past, present and future of the nonprofit group in the wake of the recent hullabaloo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/404963944d49420ea4463d6c1d63f8d954c348c6.webp\" alt=\"Two photos, one a portrait of a drag nun and one showing the backs of two drag nuns outdoors.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/404963944d49420ea4463d6c1d63f8d954c348c6.webp\" alt=\"Two photos, one a portrait of a drag nun and one showing the backs of two drag nuns outdoors.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters\u2019 origins date to 1979, when three gay men began running around San Francisco in nun\u2019s habits. What started as an audacious joke quickly became more serious when the AIDS crisis struck in the early \u201980s and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence held&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.thesisters.org\/sistory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first fundraisers for AIDS<\/a>&nbsp;organizations and put out the first safer-sex pamphlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Word spread of the group that married irreverence with service, and new chapters sprang up in cities around the world, including in L.A. in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters\u2019 mission statement is \u201cthe expiation of stigmatic guilt and the promulgation of universal joy,\u201d but since their inception, they\u2019ve been called diabolical and anti-Catholic and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/o\/TzP0f\/https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-05-19\/sisters-of-perpetual-indulgence-dodgers-pride-night\" target=\"_blank\">accused by their detractors of mocking Catholic nuns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not how they see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re not mocking anything,\u201d said Sister Harlot D Lite (red ribbed mini-dress, red tassel earrings, ornate pink makeup). \u201cWe appreciate nuns, and we\u2019re doing it our own way, for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/437bbe2fa0d1f51da5a330d25eda1a39904ec7ea.webp\" alt=\"A drag queen in a red dress, beard, face paint and ornate wimpole headdress strikes a pose outdoors.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/437bbe2fa0d1f51da5a330d25eda1a39904ec7ea.webp\" alt=\"A drag queen in a red dress, beard, face paint and ornate wimpole headdress strikes a pose outdoors.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of the sisters work on a volunteer basis, and any money they earn through donations, appearances or the events they throw is disbursed to charitable organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny dollar that comes into the sisters goes right back out to the community,\u201d Sister Candy Side said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t benefit us in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also minister individually to people in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">We do have a serious responsibility. Let\u2019s live up to that and give people the truth of our hearts as well as the glitter and humor.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the sisters call one-on-one interactions \u201cmission work\u201d and said they happen all the time. They recalled the time Sister Mariposa Patriota, now a sister emeritus, was standing on a corner in West Hollywood amid the thump-thump of dance music, talking with a young man who had just come out to his parents in Orange County. He was crying because it hadn\u2019t gone well. She assured him that he would be OK and that, while it was painful now, there was a community of thousands ready to support him and be his friends and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Unity remembers taking a confession in the bathroom stall of a gay bar from a burly leather daddy who was worried about his boyfriend. Sister June Cleavage recently spent 30 minutes at the sisters\u2019 annual White Dress Party holding the hand of a volunteer who was grieving for his mother, who had recently died.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/e0f21739f256286248522b9b86d5a0d498965321.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in white face paint, wimpole and elaborate orange dress and cape.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/e0f21739f256286248522b9b86d5a0d498965321.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in white face paint, wimpole and elaborate orange dress and cape.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some sisters think the anonymity of the white makeup allows people to open up to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a mask, and sometimes people are more comfortable talking to a mask than an actual person\u2019s face,\u201d Sister Candy Cide said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Loose Clarita, whose striped iridescent makeup resembles the Mexican flag, said the sisters are playing with the archetype of the jester or the clown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnless you have a phobia, you know the clown is not going to hurt you. He\u2019s the dumb one, the one that has no value,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd so it allows us to access in other people the dark places they might be afraid to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joining the Sisters is not as simple as choosing a great name and putting on makeup. The process usually lasts at least 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/d8668e05f66cb9f9b748cd38c09fc65750cb0ae2.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in a peach outfit with colorful face paint stands outdoors looking up.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/d8668e05f66cb9f9b748cd38c09fc65750cb0ae2.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in a peach outfit with colorful face paint stands outdoors looking up.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It begins with the aspirant stage, when a person declares their interest in becoming a sister, selects a name and starts attending meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that all goes well, three months later, she enters the postulant stage, at which she can start wearing the makeup but is not yet given a veil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six months after that, she will move up to the novice stage, at which she dons the Hoobie Doobie and is expected to participate in events and meetings but must wear a white veil at events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To graduate to full-fledged sister, each novice must complete a project, such as producing an event or organizing a safe-sex campaign. One sister wrote a cookbook and gave the proceeds to an AIDS organization. Another organized a sister story time at an LGBTQ+ space in Torrance, where sisters read to kids in English and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I tell people is that each stage is kind of like, \u2018Does your crazy match our crazy?\u2019\u201d Sister Kumonawanna Leya said. \u201cAnd also, \u2018Are you here for the work in addition to the frivolity?\u2019 Because it is work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/d9c2cf41139185847765e06cfa0ff9265c9ef07c.webp\" alt=\"Side-by-side photos of a drag nun in red, hands clasped in prayer, and a close-up of brooches on the nun's chest.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/d9c2cf41139185847765e06cfa0ff9265c9ef07c.webp\" alt=\"Side-by-side photos of a drag nun in red, hands clasped in prayer, and a close-up of brooches on the nun's chest.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sisters are used to attracting attention, but many acknowledge that the recent whiplash has taken an emotional toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When news media suggested that the Dodgers initially rescinded the award because the baseball team\u2019s fan base is largely Latino and Catholic, Sister Bearonce Knows, a lifelong fan of the team, was upset. \u201cI was like, \u2018Yeah, that\u2019s&nbsp;<em>me<\/em>,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cSo what do you want to talk about?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Tootie said that for many of the sisters, the initial snub called up painful experiences from the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy initial reaction was here we go again \u2014 same old, same old,\u201d she said. \u201cAs mostly queer and gay people, we\u2019re used to disappointment and things being taken from us. A lot of us have experienced that with our families and friends and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many of the sisters said there was an upside to the experience too, even before the Dodgers apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am a Mexican gay man who lives in the United States of America, so I\u2019m always scared,\u201d Sister Bearonce said. \u201cThis particular situation doesn\u2019t change that for me, but I felt mostly supported, not only by our own community but from people outside our community as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%20370%20247'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/ed1d1d14f16a46d47b7869548e65d2c9ba8b9aa7.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in a green dress and boots sits on a boulder outdoors.\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/TzP0f\/ed1d1d14f16a46d47b7869548e65d2c9ba8b9aa7.webp\" alt=\"A drag nun in a green dress and boots sits on a boulder outdoors.\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Tootie agreed. \u201cI was initially sad, but when I saw the outpouring of love that came out, it just brought me back to life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister Unity was touched by all the support that came from LGBTQ+ organizations, which haven\u2019t always been universally welcoming to those who do drag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a cultural change in the LGBTQ community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for Sister Candy Cide, the most meaningful support she received came from her biological family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years ago, she struggled to come out to her parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last week, though, her mother called to share that she was shocked to hear people saying terrible things about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
