{"id":3567,"date":"2023-05-26T11:35:30","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T16:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3567"},"modified":"2023-05-26T11:35:31","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T16:35:31","slug":"majority-of-americans-support-spending-cuts-if-debt-ceiling-is-raised-poll-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=3567","title":{"rendered":"Majority of Americans Support Spending Cuts If Debt Ceiling Is Raised, Poll Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p>A significant majority of Americans believe that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/27\/the-debt-ceiling-debate-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.S. debt ceiling<\/a>&nbsp;should only be raised if it\u2019s paired with spending cuts, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23822858\/cnn-poll-debt-ceiling-biden-border-security.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN poll released<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sixty percent of the poll\u2019s 1,227 respondents answered that \u201cCongress should only raise&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/05\/24\/debt-ceiling-negotiations-still-far-apart-mccarthy-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the debt ceiling&nbsp;<\/a>if it cuts spending at the same time.\u201d Twenty-four percent of the respondents answered that the debt ceiling should be raised \u201cno matter what,\u201d while 15% answered that \u201cCongress should not raise the debt ceiling and allow the U.S. to default on its debts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll, which was conducted from May 17 to May 20, also asked about consequences should the debt ceiling not be raised. (The Daily Signal is Heritage\u2019s multimedia news organization.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost Americans understand what the average politician in D.C. does not: Government spending is out of control,\u201d Antoni&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/author\/samantha-renck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told The Daily Signal<\/a>&nbsp;in a statement. \u201cFrom inflation to the banking crisis, the detritus of excessive spending is everywhere, and these problems will persist until the spending is reduced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf politicians do not listen to the voters on this, they risk being removed from office at the next election,\u201d Antoni said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll was released amid ongoing negotiations between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden about raising the debt ceiling. On Jan. 19, the U.S. hit its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/23\/most-americans-oppose-raising-debt-ceiling-without-spending-cuts-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">debt limit<\/a>&nbsp;of $31.4 trillion,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/25\/despite-his-threat-biden-will-negotiate-on-debt-ceiling-sen-rand-paul-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Daily Signal previously reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll also asked, \u201cBased on what you have read or heard about the discussions between Congress and Joe Biden on the debt ceiling, do you think that Biden has or has not acted responsibly?\u201d Fifty-nine percent of the respondents said that the president has not acted responsibly, whereas 40% answered that he has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll posed the same question about congressional Republicans. Thirty-five percent of the respondents said they \u201chave acted responsibly\u201d while 64% said they hadn\u2019t. One percent of the respondents answered \u201cno opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poll was released one day after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewed warnings<\/a>&nbsp;about the debt ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am writing to follow up on my previous letters regarding the debt limit and to provide additional information regarding the Treasury Department\u2019s ability to continue to finance the operations of the federal government,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/system\/files\/136\/Debt-Limit-Letter-to-Congress-Members-20230522-McCarthy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yellen wrote in letters<\/a>&nbsp;to McCarthy, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.; Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.; and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my May 15 letter, I noted that our best estimate was that Treasury would be unable to continue to satisfy all of the government\u2019s obligations by early June if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before that time,\u201d Yellen wrote. \u201cIn that letter, I also noted that while it is impossible to predict with certainty the exact date when Treasury will be unable to pay all the government\u2019s bills, I would continue to update Congress as more information becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yellen added, \u201cWith an additional week of information now available, I am writing to note that we estimate that it is highly likely that Treasury will no longer be able to satisfy all of the government\u2019s obligations if Congress has not acted to raise or suspend the debt limit by early June, and potentially as early as June 1.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Original Article: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/05\/26\/majority-americans-support-spending-cuts-debt-ceiling-raised-poll-finds\/\">https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/05\/26\/majority-americans-support-spending-cuts-debt-ceiling-raised-poll-finds\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A significant majority of Americans believe that&nbsp;the U.S. debt ceiling&nbsp;should only be raised if it\u2019s paired with spending cuts, a&nbsp;CNN poll released&nbsp;on Tuesday found.
