purchase, importation, or manufacture of \u201cassault weapons\u201d within the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one needs an AR-15 to protect your family,\u201d Inslee declared during the signing ceremony, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/washington-governor-signs-big-gun-control-package-including-assault-weapons-ban-no-one-needs-ar-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FOX News<\/a>. \u201cYou only need it to kill other families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new ban targets more than 50 gun models, including AK-47s, AR-15s, and guns that are similar in appearance,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/washington-state-assault-weapon-ban-here-are-guns-listed-by-name-in-the-law-from-ak-47-to-uzi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Oregonian<\/a>&nbsp;reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure allows for some exception for sales to military and law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also allows gun manufacturers to sell the inventory they already had in stock prior to Jan. 1 of this year for the next 90 days, but only if the weapons are sold to people out-of-state, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.king5.com\/article\/news\/politics\/state-politics\/washington-ban-sale-assault-weapons\/281-7bee1dd8-8a96-4930-a02f-9d87c148591d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KING<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also does not prohibit citizens who already have such weapons from continuing to possess them, The Oregonian reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inslee signed off on two other gun control bills on Tuesday, one of which involved the implementation of a 10-day \u201cwaiting period and training requirement for all gun purchases,\u201d according to\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/25\/politics\/inslee-washington-assault-style-weapons-ban\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those requirements go into effect on Jan. 1, 2024, FOX News reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third measure provides citizens \u201cwith the ability to sue firearm manufacturers or retailers for irresponsible conduct,\u201d Inslee\u2019s office said, according to CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The governor praised himself and the state legislature for passing the new gun control laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe lead the country in so many ways, and we are leading on this,\u201d Inslee said, according to FOX News. \u201cI\u2019m not sure any state has ever taken three steps on one day.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the rest of the nation needs to follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know we need to continue this effort on a national basis,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nine other states currently have similar bans, KING reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weapons ban bill passed the state Senate in a vote of 28 to 21, with the state House following suit last week in a vote of 56 to 42, CNN reported.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both votes fell largely along party lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe legislature finds and declares that gun violence is a threat to the public health and safety of Washingtonians,\u201d the bill reads. \u201cAssault weapons are civilian versions of weapons created for the military and are designed to kill humans quickly and efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Second Amendment Foundation filed a federal lawsuit over the ban nearly immediately after Inslee signed the bills into law on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to challenging the prohibition, the foundation has asked the court for preliminary and permanent injunctions, KING reported.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe state has enacted a flat prohibition on the manufacture, sale, import and distribution of many types of firearms, inaccurately labeled as \u2018assault weapons,\u2019 which are owned by millions of ordinary citizens across the country,\u201d founder and executive vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation Alan Gottlieb said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the process, the state has criminalized a common and important means of self-defense, the modern semiautomatic rifle,\u201d Gottlieb continued. \u201cThe state has put politics ahead of constitutional rights, and is penalizing law-abiding citizens while this legislation does nothing to arrest and prosecute criminals who misuse firearms in defiance of all existing gun control laws. It is absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said he isn\u2019t concerned about the lawsuit in the slightest and that he is \u201cconfident\u201d the weapons ban will withstand legal challenges, KING reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe haven\u2019t lost a case yet against the NRA or the Second Amendment Foundation when they\u2019ve challenged common sense gun reform,\u201d Ferguson boasted. \u201cMy legal team is better than their legal team.
