{"id":2598,"date":"2023-04-04T13:10:24","date_gmt":"2023-04-04T18:10:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=2598"},"modified":"2023-04-04T13:10:24","modified_gmt":"2023-04-04T18:10:24","slug":"decarceration-la-county-makes-woke-move-to-empty-jails-with-slaps-on-the-wrist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=2598","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Decarceration\u2019: LA County makes woke move to empty jails with slaps on the wrist"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A proposal in front of the dangerously woke Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors aims to \u201cdecarcerate\u201d the city\u2019s jails by freeing with a citation anyone with bail set at $50,000 or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Added to the board\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/assets-us-01.kc-usercontent.com\/0234f496-d2b7-00b6-17a4-b43e949b70a2\/615f98ff-a2cb-4935-9301-aa094abc4ddb\/Agenda%20040423_links.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agenda<\/a>&nbsp;for a meeting to be held Tuesday is an item titled \u201cLos Angeles County to Take Actionable Next Steps to Depopulate and Decarcerate the Los Angeles County Jails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recommendation was submitted by Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis, and, not surprisingly, both are Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the plan, the county would \u201c[d]eclare the State of mental health services and overcrowding in the Los Angeles County jails a humanitarian crisis, requiring the County to move with all deliberate speed on meaningful solutions; and prioritize decreasing the number of individuals entering the Los Angeles County Jails.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And how would they \u201cdepopulate\u201d and \u201cdecarcerate\u201d the lockups?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, for one, the \u201cCounty Counsel, in collaboration with the Interim Director of Justice, Care and Opportunities,\u201d would be instructed to \u201csend a five-signature letter to Los Angeles Superior Court (LASC) to implement the Emergency Bail Schedule that was in place at the height of the COVID pandemic\u201d in an effort to \u201cprioritize increased opportunities for pre-trial release.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LA jury awards $1.5M to prosecutor who sued George Gascon for retaliation; They seek to lower the jail population without addressing the root causes of crime or protecting the public.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the plan, Siddall said, local law enforcement would be given the order to cite and release suspects accused of illegally carrying a firearm, charged with domestic violence, caught with child pornography, or thought to have committed residential burglary, robbery, or assault with a firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, he stated, the agenda item fails to address how to \u201cprotect the community from violent criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis catch-and-release program comes without any plan or infrastructure to protect the community from violent criminals apprehended by law enforcement,\u201d Siddall said. \u201cFurther, it creates no lockdown facilities for the mentally ill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis program benefits no one, except for career criminals,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe need to make sure the most dangerous offenders don\u2019t get out, that first-time offenders don\u2019t come back and that those with serious mental illnesses get appropriate care and help.
