That language says \u201cno foreign assistance funds may be used to pay for the performance of abortion as a method of family planning or to motivate or coerce any person to practice abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats are hoping to get rid of the provision that Planned Parenthood has described as a policy that \u201churts millions of people worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dems want to fund abortion \u2018everywhere\u2019 in the world by ending restrictions on US foreign aid <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zV0JJvaoPf\">https:\/\/t.co\/zV0JJvaoPf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/1639614386116632577?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 25, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and nearly 150 House Democrats proposed the \u201cAbortion Is Health Care Everywhere Act.\u201d This would repeal the Helms Amendment and open up the possibility of using foreign aid to facilitate millions of abortions around the world every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor nearly 50 years, the racist, harmful Helms amendment has barred U.S. foreign assistance from being used to offer abortion care, even in countries where abortions are legal,\u201d Schakowsky said in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe United States should not stand in the way of health care and bodily autonomy in other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe must protect women\u2019s health around the globe,\u201d she added. \u201cBy singling out abortion as a restricted health service, the Helms Amendment reinforces efforts to criminalize abortion and heightens abortion-related stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schakowsky\u2019s statement cited data from the Guttmacher Institute Which said that repealing the Helms amendment would lead to \u201c19 million fewer unsafe abortions\u201d each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another sponsor of the bill, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., said \u201cabortion care is health care,.\u201d She said that the Helms amendment is therefore denying women health care around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Helms Amendment is yet another barrier preventing millions \u2013 particularly in the global south \u2013 from accessing safe and legal abortion care, and we must reverse course,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fox News&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/dems-want-fund-abortion-everywhere-world-ending-restrictions-us-foreign-aid?intcmp=tw_fnc\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shared:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In addition to this new effort to boost abortion access overseas, Democrats have been pushing for expanded access to abortion domestically since last year, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gave authority over abortion back to the states. Several Democrats have proposed laws and regulations making it easier for people to cross state lines to receive abortions in states with more liberal rules for the procedure than their home state.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Pentagon has also announced a policy of reimbursing service members for their travel expenses when they need to travel for an abortion.
