Christian parents are especially in the cross-hairs. A bill being introduced in the U.S. Congress is pushing back against this toxic trend.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>by Jerry Newcombe, D.Min., Providence Forum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents will be held responsible by God for their children\u2019s education,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=deut+6&amp;version=ESV\">says<\/a>&nbsp;the Bible. This was a view shared by the majority of America\u2019s founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But today there is a great defiance against this on the part of many in our educational establishment. Many leaders in the educational system seem to think they know better than the parents as to what should and should not be taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FoxNews.com\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/elementary-schools-private-emails-show-secret-plans-defy-parents-wishes-transitioning-child\">reports<\/a>\u00a0(3\/4\/23): \u201cA Colorado elementary school\u2019s private emails show secret plans to defy parents\u2019 wishes on transitioning their child\u2019s gender.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a Fairfax (Virginia) County parent, Neeley McCallister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/03\/01\/fairfax-county-parent-mccarthy-parents-bill-of-rights\/?utm_medium=email&amp;pnespid=6eA6BSYbKr0LhKDB9juoCZ3QowL1CoZqMuy7yOl49RRmboXEB6fDxnGmlcg9xLWuWcr2tBlMKw\">noted<\/a>: \u201cAs parents, it is our primary duty to protect our children and preserve their innocence\u2026Unfortunately, there is a toxic movement infiltrating our schools that is more interested in pushing a political agenda rather than teaching\u2026our children the subjects we were taught in school: math, reading, science, history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCallister made these remarks during hearings to promote a bill in the new U.S. House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The new bill seeks to assert parental rights when it comes to what is taught in the schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is right and good. Centuries ago America made great strides in becoming a \u201ccity on a hill\u201d in part because of the great education so many citizens received. Initially it was based on the Bible and resulted in astounding levels of literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As James Madison, a key architect of the Constitution,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azquotes.com\/quote\/183593\">observed<\/a>, \u201cA well-instructed people alone can be permanently a free people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first Congress under the Constitution that gave us the First Amendment also passed a law that ensured that each state to be added to the new nation should be committed to education. If the American experiment were to work, it could only do so if the people could read and write for themselves. So on August 4, 1789, Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This important document&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/milestone-documents\/northwest-ordinance#:~:text=Art.-,3.,education%20shall%20forever%20be%20encouraged.\">said<\/a>&nbsp;in Article III: \u201cReligion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.\u201d This was in a day when \u201cReligion\u201d meant Christianity of one stripe or another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even Thomas Jefferson, who departed from Christian orthodoxy later in life, agreed that the Bible and Isaac Watts\u2019 Hymnals should be a part of the curriculum for the schools in the Washington, D.C. district.&nbsp; Isaac Watts was a great writer of classic Christian songs, including \u201cJoy to the World,\u201d \u201cWhen I Survey the Wonderous Cross,\u201d and \u201cJesus Shall Reign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in the last few decades, there has arisen an anti-God tenor in the schools. Last week, Foxnews.com&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/arizona-school-board-member-district-should-reject-hiring-teachers-with-christian-values-not-safe\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on a story out of the Phoenix area, where a school board rejected hiring teachers from a Christian college because these teachers were deemed \u201cnot safe\u201d: \u201cAn Arizona school board member wearing cat ears during a meeting said she would oppose having a contract with a Christian university over the religious and Biblical beliefs they espouse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another board member concurred with her, as he decried the university for \u201cteaching with a Biblical lens.\u201d The board agreed with the anti-Christian ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school board says in effect, \u201cTeachers needed. Biblical Christians need not apply.\u201d This sort of discrimination is clearly unconstitutional. But is it what parents want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have a lens, a worldview. It was a Biblical worldview, a \u201cBiblical lens,\u201d that made us the most free and prosperous nation. But if the Left had their way, only those with godless values should be teaching our children\u2014with little or no significant input from the parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Americanwirenews.com noted a similar example of anti-Christian bias at work in the schools. A public school teacher in Washington state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americanwirenews.com\/teacher-called-out-for-saying-schools-dont-do-enough-to-hide-student-info-from-christo-fascist-parents\/?utm_campaign=james&amp;utm_content=2%2F25%2F23%20LGC%20PM&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_source=Get%20response&amp;utm_term=email\">said<\/a>\u00a0we need to keep the schoolchildren safe from their \u201cChristo-fascist parents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some parents teach their children to follow the Bible\u2014the way Washington, Lincoln, and Reagan learned their values. \u201cHorrors,\u201d say many in the education establishment today, trying to separate parents from their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, the new Congress is fighting back, as noted. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gingrich360.com\/2023\/03\/03\/support-parents-rights-now\/?utm_source=pushengage&amp;utm_medium=pushengage&amp;utm_campaign=pushengage\">writes<\/a>, \u201cSpeaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans have given the American people an opportunity to dramatically strengthen the role of parents in the education of their children.\u201dThe preamble to The Parents Bill of Rights Act&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edworkforce.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/pbora-fact-sheet-pdf.pdf?_ga=2.228856988.1633092885.1677780515-1617640009.1671305181\">declares<\/a>: \u201cParents have a God-given right to make decisions for their children. Unfortunately, many school districts have been ignoring the wishes of parents while special interest groups try to criminalize free speech.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The preamble adds, \u201cThis list of rights will make clear to parents what their rights are and clear to schools what their duties to parents are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps Rep.
