Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), an avowed democratic socialist and Democratic presidential primary candidate in 2016 and 2020, was on HBO\u2019s political talk show \u2018Real Time with Bill Maher\u2019 on Friday. Mr. Maher, a liberal political satirist and commentator, pressed the 81-year-old Senator to explain the difference between equality and equity. Mr. Sanders, however, admitted he didn\u2019t know what the difference between the two was before saying that he would side with equality over equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viral exchange<\/a> between the talk show host and the politician started with Mr. Maher rightly noting that \u201cthis word \u2018equity\u2019 has come into the language in the last few years and before that, we didn\u2019t hear that a lot. I think a lot of people hear \u2018equity\u2019 and they hear \u2018equality\u2019 \u2013 like it is the same word. It is not the same word and not the same concept.\u201d He then pivots to Senator Sanders when he asks,\u201d[s]o, how would you differentiate between \u2018equity\u2019 and \u2018equality\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Senator of the Green Mountain State confusingly mused, \u201cWell \u2018equality\u2019 we talk about- I don\u2019t know the answer to that is.\u201d After this admission of ignorance, the aged Senator pondered, \u201cCome to think of it \u2018equality\u2019 is equality of opportunity. We live in a society where we want all people to have- whether color your skin\u2026\u201d At this point, Mr. Maher interrupted Senator Sander\u2019s train of thought by asking \u201c\u2018Equity\u2019 I think is more guarantee of outcome, is it not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senator nodded and said, \u201cYeah I think so. I think that is so.\u201d Mr. Maher then asked, \u201cOkay which side do you come down on?\u201d To wit, Mr. Sanders then replied, \u201cEquality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
