Our hearts ache for the victims of the senseless February 13th shootings on the Michigan State University campus.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With three dead and two of the five who were injured still hospitalized, emotions are running high.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cRock\u201d on the MSU campus was painted with a powerful message that described the way many students felt following the mass shooting that took place on their campus.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u201crock\u201d read:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAllow us to defend ourselves & carry on campus\u201d <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Few topics of discussion can evoke a more passionate (or politically charged) emotional reaction than the subject of mass shootings. While there is no question that mass shootings are horrific, opinions differ widely\u2014particularly in the United States\u2014on what causes mass shootings and what needs to be done about them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The FBI\u2019s 30-year<\/strong><\/a> definition of a mass shooting involves the fatal shooting of four or more people in a public place and unrelated to a gangs<\/strong>,<\/strong> drug<\/strong><\/a>s<\/strong> or other crime shooting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGiven this definition, a stunning 96% of all mass<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

shootings between 1998 and 2015<\/a> occurred in gun-free zones.\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, the FBI reduced its mass shooting qualifier to \u201cthree or more killings,\u201d though the majority of academics are said to continue to use the four or more definition. Changing the qualifier changes the percentages.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Per the New York Times<\/strong><\/em>:<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There is no official consensus on what constitutes a mass shooting.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So for consistency\u2019s sake, Crime Search used the FBI\u2019s pre-2013 definition.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As the heart-wrenching message on the rock on the MSU campus stated after the horrendous shootings:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Who can wonder at students\u2019 frustration at being denied their constitutional right to bear arms and defend themselves?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mass shootings are part of the larger issue of overall gun violence.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to data from the Gun Violence Archive<\/strong>:<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There have been 94 mass shootings in 2023 (3 or more killed) in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

But the Gun Violence Archive tracks only gun deaths and mass shootings within United States\u2019 borders.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
