{"id":1708,"date":"2023-03-06T15:25:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2023-03-06T15:25:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:25:34","slug":"desantis-direct-response-to-bidens-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nakedpolitics.net\/?p=1708","title":{"rendered":"DeSantis&#8217; Direct Response to Biden&#8217;s Actions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Florida Governor Ron DeSantis launched on Thursday a legislative proposal aimed at cracking down on \u201cthe increasing threats posed by illegal immigration as a result of the Biden administration\u2019s failure to secure our nation\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sweeping legislation tackles everything from human smuggling to fake IDs and the mandatory use of E-Verify for Florida employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy increasing penalties for human smuggling, strengthening statutes for the detention of illegal aliens, requiring universal use of E-Verify, enhancing penalties for document falsification, and prohibiting the issuance by local governments of ID cards to people who are not lawfully in the country, Florida will lead the way in protecting Americans from the deleterious effects of the Left\u2019s open borders agenda,\u201d the governor\u2019s office stated in a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2023\/02\/23\/governor-ron-desantis-announces-legislation-to-counteract-bidens-border-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFlorida is a law and order state, and we won\u2019t turn a blind eye to the dangers of Biden\u2019s Border Crisis,\u201d DeSantis vowed at a press conference to announce the legislation. We will continue to take steps to protect Floridians from reckless federal open border policies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Florida\u2019s Next Steps to Fight Biden\u2019s Border Crisis <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1dS98DUDw1\">https:\/\/t.co\/1dS98DUDw1<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1628759009380683777?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 23, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the proposal, knowingly transporting, concealing, or harboring an illegal alien within or into the state of Florida would become a third-degree felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, and five years of probation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that trafficked illegal alien is under the age of 18, the charge would go up to a second-degree felony and those convicted would face up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also say that it\u2019s a separate offense for each individual transported, concealed, or harbored, and then when people are being transported, even though they may not have violated this, you know, they\u2019re gonna be detained as material witnesses,\u201d DeSantis explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/2.22.23-Immigration-Handout-758.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">measures<\/a>&nbsp;is a mandatory E-Verify proposal that would require all Florida employers to use the system to determine employment eligibility. It would be a felony to use a fake ID to obtain that eligibility, and employers who violate the requirements twice in two years could have their licenses revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislative changes are crafted to disincentivize illegal immigration in the Sunshine State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local governments would be prohibited from issuing ID cards to unauthorized aliens and out-of-state licenses issued to unauthorized aliens would be invalidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To register to vote, Floridians would need proof of U.S. citizenship and legal Florida resident status. Hospitals would be required to collect data on their patients\u2019 immigration status and regularly submit reports detailing how much it costs to care for illegal aliens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unauthorized aliens seeking an education at colleges and universities would be banned from receiving out-of-state tuition waivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, in a striking proposal, illegal aliens would be prohibited from practicing law in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, loopholes that allow illegal aliens to be released from ICE detention would be closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Florida will not turn a blind eye to the dangers of Biden\u2019s Border Crisis. <br><br>We are proposing additional steps to protect Floridians from these reckless federal policies, including mandatory E-Verify and prohibiting local government from issuing ID cards to illegal aliens. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tdrZ0Jw2wY\">pic.twitter.com\/tdrZ0Jw2wY<\/a><\/p>&mdash;
