Mayor Lori Lightfoot Saturday urged <\/a>black Chicago voters to support her reelection campaign and told people who don\u2019t support her to not vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAny vote coming from the South Side for somebody not named Lightfoot is a vote for \u2018Chuy\u2019 Garcia or Paul Vallas,\u201d Lightfoot said, according to a Chicago Tribune report.\u00a0\u201cIf you want them controlling your destiny, then stay home. Then don\u2019t vote. But we\u2019ve got to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fox News further reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Rep. Jesus \u201cChuy\u201d Garcia and former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas are the other frontrunners in the election for Chicago mayor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you want them controlling your fate and your destiny, then stay home,\u201d Lightfoot continued. \u201cThen don\u2019t vote.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But after casting her vote Monday at Northeastern Illinois University, Lightfoot told reporters she did not mean to suggest voters should sit out the election.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I said anything other than everybody everywhere needs to vote, then I misspoke in the heat of a campaign rally,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I\u2019ve been very consistent all along saying everybody everywhere needs to step up, and they need to vote just as I said today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lightfoot\u2019s initial comments, however, drew criticism from her mayoral opponents who accused her of damaging the democratic process.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is disqualifying rhetoric for anyone hoping to lead a Chicago that is a multi-racial and multi-ethnic city,\u201d Garcia said, according to FOX 32.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, who is also running to become the next mayor of Chicago, said residents deserve \u201creal leadership\u201d and are ready to \u201cturn the page\u201d with the election of a new mayor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLori Lightfoot telling residents not to vote unless they vote for her shows that she cares more about maintaining power for herself than empowering communities or getting things done for the people of our city,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another challenger, philanthropist Willie Wilson, said Lightfoot\u2019s words were \u201cdelusional, divisive, dangerous and disappointing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activist Ja\u2019Mal Green, another mayoral candidate, wrote on Twitter that Lightfoot\u2019s \u201cdesperation was showing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just showed this to a bus load of new voters & the video made them more motivated than ever to vote against Lightfoot today,\u201d he wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
