The sheriff noted Kahn\u2019s actions had no impact on any state or federal election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lodi Mayor Mikey Hothi traveled to the San Joaquin County Jail to request Khan\u2019s resignation from the city council, which \u2014 according to the city\u2019s statement \u2014 he signed, effective immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe became aware of Shakir Khan\u2019s arrest this morning and I had the opportunity to speak with him here at the county jail and asked for his resignation, effective immediately,\u201d Hothi said Thursday, adding the city is fully cooperating with the investigation. \u201cI want to thank the sheriff\u2019s office and everybody involved, ensuring a fair and thorough process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Withrow said the charges against the councilman resulted from a combination of a current investigation against him and concerned citizens bringing some things to his attention, which he acted upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShakir Khan has attempted to undermine, manipulate and violate one of our most fundamental rights here in our country,\u201d the sheriff explained, \u201cand that is the right to free and fair elections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Withrow added that Khan seemed to target members of his own Pakistani community in the north county.
