A Democratic state lawmaker had some harsh words for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas during a debate over a statue in his honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Georgia Senate debated a bill on Wednesday that would place a statue of the justice in the state\u2019s capitol. However, State Sen. Emanuel Jones (D) opposed the bill and criticized Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the Black community, we have an expression \u2014 and I don\u2019t want to use this label too deeply here because I\u2019m just trying to tell you what we have in the African American community,\u201d Jones began. \u201cWhen we talk about a person of color that goes back historically to the days of slavery and that person betraying his own community, we have a term in the Black community. That term that we use is called \u2018Uncle Tom.’\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cAnd \u2018Uncle Tom\u2019 is either a fictional or nonfictional character. I don\u2019t really know the origins of \u2018Uncle Tom.\u2019 But it talks about a person who back during the days of slavery sold his soul to the slave masters. That\u2019s the fictional story of an \u2018Uncle Tom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Jones said, \u201cWhen we think about a person in the Black community who\u2019s accomplished, but yet [their] policies seek to subvert \u2014 some may even say suppress \u2014 the achievements and accomplishments of people of color, I couldn\u2019t help but to think about that term.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cY\u2019all just don\u2019t get it. And I don\u2019t expect people of non-color to get the sensitivity that we feel,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) tweeted, \u201cThe Left is so outraged by a proposal to build a statue of Clarence Thomas at the Georgia Capitol, that one unhinged lawmaker compared him to an \u2018Uncle Tom\u2019\u201d who \u2018sold his soul to the slave masters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Georgia Senate voted <\/a>on Wednesday to pass the legislation. It will now head to the state House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
