Matt Gaetz (R-FL)<\/a>\u00a0proposed that each meeting begin with the Pledge of Allegiance. Multiple Democrats on the committee took issue with that, triggering a heated back-and-forth that didn\u2019t end until Gaetz\u2019s proposal finally passed about 40 minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee member Rep. Gaetz had previously made a similar proposal to the Judiciary Committee that failed in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Introducing the proposal, Gaetz described the pledge as a \u201cnational symbol of pride and unity.\u201d But Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) called the move \u201cunnecessary\u201d because representatives already pledge allegiance every day on the House floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) said he found it \u201cironic\u201d that some members of the Judiciary Committee had \u201csupported the insurrection\u201d but now \u201cinsist\u201d on the Pledge of Allegiance. That line of thought was followed by Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), who suggested an amendment that \u201cany individual who supported an insurrection against the government of the United States in any way\u201d be prohibited from leading the committee\u2019s pledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When Rep. David Cicilline fired back saying it would be a &#39;mockery&#39; if someone who &#39;led an insurrection&#39; against the U.S. led the pledge <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WXldJoxVca\">pic.twitter.com\/WXldJoxVca<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NowThis (@nowthisnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nowthisnews\/status\/1621206058222997510?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 2, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gaetz, who was among lawmakers who objected to the certification of President Joe Biden\u2019s election on Jan. 6, 2021, said that if that counted as an insurrection, then \u201cthere would be many Democrats on the committee that wouldn\u2019t be eligible to lead the pledge\u201d under Cicilline\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI mean, the last Republican president to get sworn in absent Democratic objectors was George Herbert Walker Bush,\u201d Gaetz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After roll call votes, Cicilline\u2019s amendment failed a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/118\/meeting\/house\/115265\/documents\/CRPT-118-JU00-Vote002-20230201.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">vote<\/a>\u00a0of 13-24, with every Republican voting against it.
