North Korea Reminds Us: It is a Nuclear Power and Its Arsenal is Growing

A New Round of Nuclear Weapons Tests

North Korea has once again demonstrated its nuclear ambitions, conducting a live fire military exercise involving nuclear capable rocket systems under the direct supervision of leader Kim Jong Un. The tests highlight Pyongyang’s growing focus on tactical nuclear weapons designed for regional strikes against nearby adversaries such as South Korea and Japan.

According to North Korean state media, the drill involved a dozen 600 millimeter “ultra precision” rocket launchers and two artillery companies. During the exercise, the rockets flew more than 220 miles before striking an island target in the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.

South Korea’s military reported detecting roughly ten ballistic missiles launched from the North Korean capital region toward the eastern sea.

The weapons system tested is believed to be the KN 25, a hybrid between a short range ballistic missile and a multiple rocket launcher. The rockets are about eight meters long, weigh around three tonnes, and can carry either conventional or nuclear warheads.

Tactical Nuclear Weapons Designed for Regional Strikes

Unlike long range intercontinental missiles meant to strike distant targets, the systems tested by North Korea are designed for shorter range battlefield use.

The 600 millimeter launchers have an estimated operational range of around 260 miles to 420 kilometers. From northern launch positions, they can cover almost the entire territory of South Korea.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un described the system in glowing terms after observing the drill.

“It is indeed a very deadly yet attractive weapon,” Kim said. “Our powerful attacking capability is, in effect, for defending ourselves.”

He also warned that the weapons demonstrate the destructive potential of tactical nuclear arms.

“If this weapon is used, the opponent’s military infrastructure within its striking range can never survive,” Kim said.

The accuracy of the system is reportedly within about 80 to 90 meters even at distances exceeding 360 kilometers.

Kim Personally Oversees the Tests

Kim Jong Un personally oversaw the launch exercise and was photographed walking among rocket launch vehicles alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae (13), and senior military officials.

Ju Ae has increasingly appeared at major military events, fueling speculation among analysts that she may eventually succeed her father as North Korea’s leader.

The presence of Kim himself underscores the importance the regime places on these weapons systems. The 600 millimeter rocket launcher program was highlighted as a major priority during a recent Workers’ Party meeting.

Rows of the launchers were even displayed outside the venue during the gathering, presented as a major achievement of North Korea’s munitions industry.

Earlier this year, fifty new five tube launchers for the system were formally delivered to the army during a ceremony presided over by Kim.

Mass production of the weapons has reportedly been increasing since 2023.

Tests Timed With U.S. and South Korea Military Exercises

The missile launches came as the United States and South Korea conduct their annual spring military drills known as Freedom Shield.

The exercises, which run from March 9 through March 19, involve about 18,000 South Korean troops along with a range of joint training operations.

North Korea has long condemned the drills as rehearsals for invasion and frequently conducts weapons tests during the exercises as a form of protest.

Analysts say the timing of the launch was almost certainly intentional.

Hong Min, a senior analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said the launch pattern appeared closely aligned with the schedule of the joint drills.

“This suggests the weapons system is being operated as a means of nuclear deterrence and practical demonstration” against the U.S. South Korea alliance, he said.

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, also warned earlier that the military exercises could lead to “unimaginably terrible consequences.”

Growing Nuclear Arsenal

North Korea already possesses a significant nuclear arsenal and continues expanding it.

The Kim regime is estimated to have roughly 50 nuclear warheads along with enough fissile material to produce dozens more.

In addition to its tactical systems, North Korea has also developed long range missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland.

The country has recently tested cruise missiles from a naval destroyer and announced plans to arm its navy with nuclear weapons.

At the same time, North Korea has demanded that any future negotiations with the United States begin with recognition of its status as a nuclear armed state.

Kim has shown little interest in restarting diplomacy unless Washington accepts that condition.

Regional Reactions and Rising Tensions

South Korea strongly condemned the missile launches, calling them a provocation that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Seoul’s National Security Office urged Pyongyang to halt the tests and instructed government agencies to maintain heightened readiness.

Japan also monitored the situation closely after several missiles landed in waters outside its exclusive economic zone.

South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies tracked the launch preparations in advance and shared information with Japanese authorities.

Officials in Seoul say they remain prepared to respond decisively if North Korea escalates its military activities further.

A Reminder of North Korea’s Nuclear Reality

The latest weapons tests are another reminder that North Korea is not only a nuclear power but one that continues to build and refine its arsenal.

Despite periodic diplomatic overtures over the years, Pyongyang has continued to develop new weapons systems and expand production.

The country’s leadership insists these weapons are necessary for deterrence and self defense. But the ongoing tests highlight the risks posed by a heavily armed nuclear state led by an unpredictable authoritarian regime.

Kim Jong Un presides over one of the world’s most tightly controlled societies, where the population faces chronic food shortages and economic hardship even as massive resources are poured into weapons programs.

As these latest tests demonstrate, North Korea is steadily strengthening its nuclear capabilities while tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain unresolved.
