On Tuesday, Democrat President Joe Biden told the president of Lithuania that the United States would provide everything his country needs if Russia invades the Baltic States.
“Our pledge to be with you has not wavered,” Biden said. “It didn’t take us long to get thousands of troops here when Russia invaded the second time. We’ll be assured that you’re gonna have all that you need. We have the secretary of defense here today. We can send him alone.”
Biden’s pledge comes after the United States announced it would be sending additional military aid to Ukraine to assist in its fight against the Russian invasion. The United States has already sent more than $100 billion to Ukraine, and the new military aid package includes controversial cluster munitions, which are expected to lead to more civilian casualties.
The dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICMs), commonly known as cluster munitions, are “surface-to-surface warheads that explode and disperse multiple small munitions or bombs over wide areas — bringing more widespread destruction than single rounds. The rounds can be charges that penetrate armored vehicles, or they can shatter or fragment to be more dangerous for people,” NBC News explained.
Cluster munitions also can notoriously leave unexploded bomblets, or duds, which can later explode and potentially injure or kill innocent civilians.
Notably, the use of cluster munitions by Russia early in its invasion of Ukraine was part of the basis for President Biden to label Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”
