Amused conservatives are taking note of the selective outrage coming from the left in response to Chris Rock’s new comedy special, which aired on Netflix Saturday evening.
Many on the left argue that Rock went too far during his stand-up special, “Selective Outrage,” when he poked fun at Meghan Markle (for her claims of being a victim of racism) and Jada Pinkett (for her “open” relationship arrangement with husband Will Smith).
During his routine, Rock, for the first time, referenced the infamous slap that occurred during last year’s Oscars — in which Will Smith slapped Rock during the live broadcast after taking offense to the host’s comments about Pinkett.
Fox News Entertainment reported that Rock’s special, which included jokes referencing the royal family, O.J. Simpson, the Kardashians and transgenderism, “angered thought leaders and influencers on the left … [many of whom] “called it ‘shocking.’”
Carnegie Mellon University professor Uju Anya commented on Twitter that Rock deserved to be assaulted by Smith and lamented Netflix’s decision to promote Rock’s comedy special.
“Netflix keeps screwing over subscribers,” Anya complained. “They cancel hit shows people actually wanna watch and give Chris Rock millions of dollars to prove Will Smith was right to slap him.”
Anya received some pushback for her comment: “You have good takes, this isn’t one of them,” one Twitter user told Anya.
NBC reporter Ben Collins noted that he started but turned off Rock’s performance.
“Got 14 minutes into the Chris Rock special before my subconscious took over,” Collins wrote, “and turned my whole TV off,” the professional communicator continued. “My soul was dying and took control of my physical self.”
Collins added: “Truly shocking, and I didn’t have high hopes.”
MSNBC analyst Brittany Packnett Cunningham did not watch the show but chimed in on the discussion: “I didn’t watch that Chris Rock special, and I’m not going to. But absolutely nothing being reported today surprises me. Nothing.”
