New House Speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), has vowed to investigate the Biden administration’s handling of the COVID pandemic, the southern border, the “weaponization” of the Department of Justice and the suppression of data found on an abandoned laptop belonging to Hunter Biden.
Investigations into several important matters are underway. DOJ officials were summoned to a first hearing last week. On Tuesday, Fox News reported that newly released communications found on Hunter Biden’s laptop indicate the president’s son boasted about his “very good relationship” with President Obama’s ambassador to China.
Speculation abounds regarding whether or not Hunter used his name and father to leverage access to high officials and secure lucrative positions and contracts.
Reportedly, Hunter’s mention of a “very good relationship” with the ambassador to China was one of several communications that opened the door for him to schedule multiple high-level meetings with business associates.
Data from the laptop shows that Hunter and his business associates at BHR began meeting with former Senator Max Baucus less than two months after then-Vice President Biden swore in Baucus as the U.S. Ambassador to China in 2014.
According to Fox News, BHR is a “Beijing-backed private equity firm controlled by Bank of China Limited.” The firm was established in 2013 when Jimmy Bulger’s Boston-based Thornton Group LLC joined Hunter’s now-defunct Rosemont Seneca to launch a joint venture with Chinese investment firm Bohai Capital.
Laptop files reveal that on Apr. 2, 2014, Hunter’s business partner BHR co-founder Devon Archer noted in an email to Alwen Liu of Bohai Capital that he was “currently arranging a meeting with the new U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus for late April / early May to meet our leadership team in Beijing.”
Archer was forced to resign from BHR in 2016 when he was charged by the U.S. Justice Department and SEC for defrauding a Native American tribe. A judge sentenced Archer to a year and a day in federal prison for the crime.
In a series of emails, Hunter noted his “really close” relationship with Baucus and that he would secure “anything we need.”
Several email messages found on Hunter’s laptop correspond to when then-President Obama traveled to China on a state visit and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Records also reveal that approximately three months after President Obama’s state visit to China, Hunter’s partner Archer sent an email to Bulger, the nephew of the well-known Boston mobster Whitey Bulger, noting he was in talks with Baucus’ office and would soon have another meeting with the ambassador.
“Also spoke to Ambassador Baucus’s office, and they were willing to do a meeting next week. Tentatively,” Archer wrote on Jan. 27, 2015, Cc’ing Hunter.
According to the Fox News report, on Jan. 28, 2015, while discussing scheduling for a fifth BHR board meeting, BHR managing partner Jason Zhu said Baucus had “arranged a meeting with BHR” at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing that Feb. 5.
On Feb. 2, 2015, Zhu sent the official schedule for Beijing to the BHR board members which included a “Meeting with Ambassador Baucus” at “the U.S. Embassy at 2PM on Feb. 5.”
The connection with Chinese officials seemed to strengthen with time as records reveal that on Oct. 9, 2015, top BHR executive Xin Wang sent an email to Archer, Hunter and other board members, saying “it would be great” if Baucus could attend a private dinner after a BHR seminar later that month.
Wang continued: “We will be hosting a private dinner after the seminar for a select group of guests, and it would be great if Ambassador Baucus could make an attendance then. I will leave it to you to work your magic.”
Archer responded: “I appreciate that and will work on the Ambassador in the meantime.”
Hunter has claimed he divested his 10% stake in the company in 2020. Though the claims are disputed, in Nov. 2021 Hunter’s attorney confirmed the divestiture to The New York Times.
During a recent interview with Politico, Baucus said he has “always” had an interest in China and acknowledged he had established an “Institute” in his home state of Montana where China maintains a Summer Abroad program.
